|

Ok any help on this would be greatly appreciated. So the other night i was driving on the free way shifting my car to ware it doesn't grind but putting power on it once its in gear. seemed fine till i slowed to a stop and i could here some sort of rotational noise coming from around my transmission. I got the car home and the next day i started it and it still made the noise but it stops when i push the clutch down. Let off the clutch and its back. When your driving it you can here it when its in gear. Now I pulled the trans out and i found that my mount was shot. Will that cause the throw out bearing to wear. The pilot bearing is fine. I guess my question is do you think that it would be my throw out bearing then or is it something internal.
Thanks Tim _________________ Thirdgenless |

| my v6 car has just always made that noise. same deal, most pronounced when not in gear, clutch out. put the clutch in and it goes away. i am prety sure it is the throwout bearing. take my advise.... do NOT use the cheapo one that comes with your 95$ napa clutch (in fact, don't get a napa clutch at all). use a good one, buy a federal mogul throw out bearing, or atleast the dura-life one or somthing. mine has made this noise since i installed it. |

It can be the throwout bearing but if you replace it and that's not it you've got something else.
I was going to suggest inputshaft bearings but you hear the same noise while in gear.
Could be something could be nothing. Check the fluid.
Mount will not make the TO bearing go out.
FWIW My jeep transmission is incredibly loud especially when at idle with the clutch out. I've been told by the dealership and jeep world it's normal. I can hear the same with my T56 if I really listen for it.... thankfully the exhaust is loud :O) |

Thanks guys. I guess i should have mentioned that it was put in a year ago. Oh and it has a centerforce clutch Tony But i guess the throw out bearing can go out that quick.? I guess tomorrow i will pick one up and give it a shot. _________________ Thirdgenless |

You know i started thinking, I don't think it would be the throw out bearing. I mean why would it not get worse when i push the clutch down. That is when the throw out bearing gets all its force at. But then i started thinking maybe it stops because that quiets the bearing down. I mean this noise just doesn't all of a sudden stop. It sounds like it rolls to a stop. Which makes me believe its something internal. Correct me if I'm wrong on that assumption. Plus the idiot at the west bay by my house says "they don't sell them". I'm pretty sure he wasn't using the computer right. _________________ Thirdgenless |

I would think it would be the throw out bearing. With the clutch engaged the input shaft and the flywheel are together while the throwout bearing is free from any major force. With the clutch disengaged the input shaft is free to spin independant of the flywheel and the throwout bearing now has all the pedal force on it.
So if the noise happens with the clutch depressed, its the pilot bearing. If it happens with clutch engaged, its the throwout bearing. Especially if the bearing is dried out and sloppy. The pressure may be pushing the bearing balls back in to the races and quieting it down. I would definetly get to it before it grenades. _________________ E30

Did you put the TO bearing in backwards?
Make sure that the pressure plate is fully secured. If you have one bolt loose it'll make noise w/ the pedal up, and go away w/ the pedal down. Ask me how I know |

Well thats not a problem. I have already taken the trans out. The throw out bearing looks dry and has slop. But would that carry through out even when i'm in gear? When i drained the trans before i dropped it the fluid had some silver color to it. Like a haze. I kniw that the transmission is almost gone just don't want to put the thing back in there to have it still making the same noise? Maybe I'll order a throw out bearing and try putting it back in sunday. _________________ Thirdgenless |

I'm not th one who put the trans in there. But it was in the right way. I'll have to check the pressure plate. _________________ Thirdgenless |

TO bearing isn't going to make a gear whine sound through the trans.
Check the fluid in the trans. Look for metal flakes and such.
TO bearing will sound bad with foot off the clutch and silent with foot in most of the time when they are going. When you put your foot on the clutch the fork seats the bearings and applies pressure which takes up the slop. When your foot is off the clutch the bearing is just flopping around which can make the squeeky sound. |

Ya but its not a squeeky sound. I would have known that it was the throw out bearing if it was doing that. When i drained the trans to take it out. The fluid had a silver haze in it. Which tells me i need a transmission. But my throw out bearing didn't look good either. So i'll just put one in it on sunday and if it doesn't fix it then i know its the trans. Thanks guys for all the help. _________________ Thirdgenless |

How silvery was the "haze"? I've had that effect with the ATF draining fast out of a T-5? If I were you I'd double check the the pilot bushing for wear (since you'll have the tranny out, right?) and the TOB. I think this is a panic-over-nothing situation. Just my .02. _________________

It was not enough for me to be alarmed since i'm going to swap soon anyways. I've checked the pilot bearing and it looks like its in great shape. Needles are fine. I threw some grease in it just since the trans is out why not? The throw out bearing looks like its bad to me. I will get a new one and throw it back together on sunday and hope it all works. I really want this car back on the road. I get complements everywhere i go. Plus its a heck of a lot faster then my rs _________________ Thirdgenless |
