Well, the misses and I have planned a trip to the Oregon Coast. We have a couple of things we want to see/do. We're leaving this Wed afternoon and plan to be back this Sunday. What we have planned:
Camping on beach in the Tahoe
Visiting the Astoria Column
Haystack Rock
Sea Lion Caves
Tillamook (of course )
Party in Portland at McMinimins Saturday
Could anyone give me some other places to visit while on the road? I'll be taking my Tahoe as it has plenty of room inside to sleep. I didn't want to pay for a hotel for 4 nights, and this will be fun. We don't know how far down we want to drive but if its fun or cool, we'd like to see it! _________________ E30

How far south are the caves? We'll be visiting the Aquarium in Newport. |

The oregon caves are Waaaay south and not that close to the coast.
I highly reccomend a stop at the Yaquina head lighthouse, or Devils Punchbowl State Park. _________________

Let me start this by saying, Oregon is a beautiful state! I wouldn't mind relocating to the area. People were very nice and the beer was GREAT!
Day 1
Left home at 12pm. First stop Astoria. Made it by 515! No traffic anywhere! Drove the I-5 to the 4? and then over the big floating bridge to the Astoria Column. Very cool. We left at about 630 after climbing it and hanging out. Got a shot glass. Left there and cruised to Cannon beach via the 101. Excellent cruise even though it was in my 6000lb Tahoe Hung out at local brew pub Bills and slept in the campground right at the first stop sign.
Day 2
Left Cannon Beach at noonish, drove south to Newport. Visited Tillamook cheese factory and the air museum thats in a blimp hanger. Stopped at Yaquina lighthouse and tooled around. Drove down the beach front. Very nice! Got off the 101 after the bridge looking for a campground. What did we find? ROGUE BREWERY! We had to stop, taste beer, ended up staying the night in the parking lot, LOL! Very good beer....
Day 3
Hung out in Newport, went to Ripleys, Wax museum, ocean gardens (kinda lame, they canceled our show due to technical difficulties), NEWPORT AQUARIUM (!), lunch on the beach, and left about 3ish. Headed over to McMinville. Stopped at the Spruce Goose air museum. Got into McMinville at 7ish. Went to McMinimins until 10ish, slept in a motel.
Day 4
Drove to girlfriends family's place, hung out. Drove up to Portland, stayed at the Marriott, bar hopped and closed down McMinimins.
Day 5
Drove home at 12pm, tired, spent, ready to be home, but utterly content with my vacation! Made it to Ferndale (262 miles) in 5 hours with traffic and downpours. |

Lots of things to see. BTW that is just a regular bridge not a floating bridge to Astoria. At one time it was the worlds longest even. I've boated alongside it in a gillnetter and there's barely any water under the low section. We had the outdrive up and I thought I was going to have to push! There were seagulls standing on the sand on both sides of the boat. |

No kidding? As we were driving over it we noticed that as the sun broke through the clouds it was lighting up the water really good. Probably because it was only a couple feet deep! |

At one time there used to be horse barns on those sand bars. At high tide they'd put the horses in the barns. Then they'd bring them out on the sand at low tide to pull in the set nets. If you go to the museums there are pictures of old timers using the horses to pull in sturgeon up to 40ft long! Amazing photos. |

Probably, you live right off of 38th street by Albertsons, right? I drive past there all the time. I now have a burgundy right front fender and large hole in my bumper cover, the car really sticks out! |

Yeah, back in that hole behind the store.
I did actually see it just the other day at the Jack in the Box on 56th. Didn't notice any fender problem though. |

Please refer to Day 2 above. We got toasted on 2 sample trays and a pint, each! Not our intention, but the beer was great. My favorite was the Brewers Ale. Unfortunatly, they don't distribute that one |

ohhh, i missed that, I saw newport and mcmen's on day 3, and figured you somehow might have snuck through newport without going to rogue.
BTW, next trip, you should go to pelican brewery in pacific city. and post that you are doing a beer trip on the coast, so some of us can join. |
