My 87Z (see garage) is finally running right.... and I discovered the reason for the fire wasn't either what I thought it was... or my fault.
As you all probably know, our V8 cars are batch fire at the injectors, meaning they fire 4 at a time on each side.
Apparently, what happened wasn't the 12 volt main arcing out at the dipstick tube because I had done a bad job of routing it... apparently, instead, what happened was that I lost an entire bank of injectors while I was on the freeway... which dropped me to four cylinders firing with gas.
The 4 injector wires on each bank, I'm given to understand, all have a single connection to a larger wire that the voltage uses to travel on command from the CPU. For whatever the reason, (it appears to have been corrosion or breakage) that connection stopped working.
The problem with that is that from the non-firing side, pure air was blowing, under pressure, into the y pipe... not, I'm told, unlike a blast furnace, heating it to the point where the typical under-car crud ignited.
With the SLP stainless setup I have the Y pipe is extremely close to the floor. The converter gets hot anyway, but this pipe is forward of the heat shield. I'm told that, even now, at idle, the floor gets to 200 degrees... and only down to 130 when the car is moving.
The moral of the story is that among other things to be examined in the maintenance sense, the injector wires that connect to the harness should be checked to insure a solid connection. Otherwise... _________________ "Are you guys ready? Let's roll."

| Seems kind of far fetched. Surprised it even would run on only four cylinders, especially all four on one side. Still sounds like poor electrical routing/conections. |

Regardless at least she is running again. What are you going to do with this car Kelly? I think you alluded to a drag only car in a previous post. Would be fun to have you along on some cruises again.

It was running very badly. I was at speed on the freeway... it started running like crap. I tried to get it to the next exit... I lost my lock up, looked in the mirror... and it was like my engine had blown. The rest was history.
Is that what happened? I can only go by what the guys who fixed it told me.
But it should be back on the street very soon. _________________ "Are you guys ready? Let's roll."
