Thought today I would go looking for some chassis/suspension parts for my 89 RS. I have headers from alloy and got those ceramic coated, now I need to finish the exhaust. Today I went to Airport wrecking here in Bremerton and found a 32mm front sway bar off a Trans-Am to replace the stock 30mm. I also found a 24mm rear sway bar off a Z-28 to replace the sock 18mm. I would have liked to find a 36mm front bar, but they seem kind of rare here. I've got shocks and struts ordered and they should be here Wednesday. Now I need springs to go with (I think Brandon said he has some I can use).

I also found some early model T-Top hooks that Zac is looking for, but I didn't have the right size torx driver to remove the hardware from the tops (next time Wink ), I saw at least 2 sets.

I got a set of 82 sill plates, and a 4th gen seat belt today myself Very Happy The sill plates are going on Ebay unless anyone here wants them to do a 4th gen seat belt conversion. They are tan by the way, but can be painted.

Sorry for the mini hijack, but I've been wondering what the point of the LT1 belt swap is? Are the later belts way better or something?

Ok......Al.......I'm not trying to hijack your thread ok?? Just gonna answer the question.

The 4th gen belts are newer and only have the top retractor. They work sooooooo much better than my 20 year old ones. To do the job right you need the 82 style sill plates to cover the big hole that's left after taking out the old style belt and putting in the 4th gen ones with no bottom retractor.

Thanks for the info man. I'll keep it in mind since my drivers side belt wont retract without giving me a lot of trouble.

Back on topic: Al, were any of the cars down there five-speeds? Might be worth a drive for me since I need a few parts.

Didn't notice since I was snooping around the suspension areas. Most with the motors still in were V6. But there were close to 20 f-body cars there.

I'll take it, thanks. I've wire brushed most of the grease & dirt off, all that's left is to sand & paint or powdercoat.

Looks like a trade at COWS. I'm bringing the purple 92. Going to show as "stock" since the only real mods are interior and wheels Very Happy

Going back to the seatbelt change over.

Does that mean that 82 was the only year of 3rd gen that didn't have retractors on the bottom since its the only year the sill plates are like that?

Someone on TGO told me the 83's were also like the 82's, but I've not ran across an 83 yet to check and see. But this was definately an 82 I got the plates off of.

EDIT:

Ok........just learned something important about 4th gen belts.

My left 4th gen belt wasn't in the greatest of shape, so I got a another one at the bone yard yesterday. Didn't think much about it, got a right side and called it good since they will totally interchange. Or so I thought they would. The right side belt I got is in pristine shape and worked very well in the car I got it out of. But..........put it in my car on the LEFT side and it doesn't work worth crap. Put it on the right and it's great.

Got to looking inside the retractor and they are marked right and left for a good reason. In looking inside the retractor assembly there is this little pendulum for the inertia lock for when you slam on your brakes. And this little pendulum needs to sit level in the car. The upper belt mount isn't level, I'd say it at about a 25 deg. angle, and the retractors have that angle built in on the pendulum mount to keep it level. If you swap sides, it's not level and the belt won't come out very easy at all. So.........back to the yards again tomorrow for a LEFT side belt for me.

Live and learn I guess. Feelin kinda dumb about now actually Duh

Hope this little bit of info helps others out.

It was at Airport Wrecking by the raceway. Get the right torx driver and the whole mechanism will come out.

Sway bars cleaned up nicely. I painted the rear one red, and since the front isn't going on my car (Tony gets it), I put some black paint on it to keep it from picking up any more dirt (the way bare steel does). I still need to scuff it up some and repaint where it didn't stick real well (fish eyed on me).

And while I'm posting pics of parts, here's what alloy's headers look like now with a ceramic coating.

Laughing Thanks John. Did the work outside, except the headers (Performance Coatings did those), only brought them inside for pictures. I'll be driving the purple one again, I'm hoping to start some work on the red one about that time. I'm also picking up a thing or two for the red one there Very Happy
