Well, the car is not wanting to run again.
Same thing as before, about two months ago.
Thought it was MSD, looked at battery voltage, computer, chip.
Then the car just started running like a race car.
It was running sweet.
Then bam yesterday.....spiting and sputtering, then nothing,
I hate intermittent problems.......Maybe I can blame this on the hit and run thing when the adjuster comes out????LOL….
So we will be looking at all this stuff again this weekend. We put new plugs in last night. No change.
Old plugs looked great, or way better than the ones we took out 2 months ago.
This is a bummer.
But hey. Its the price one pays, when building a hot rod, its takes a while to rub out all the wrinkles.
Crap

My friends 89 I-ROC had that problem. It ended up being the ignition module. Then later the car did it again and he tried to replace a bunch of stuff computer and everything, then i told him to take his chip out and put the stock one back in. Solved the problem. Just my two cents. _________________ Thirdgenless |

Ya I did the new chip thing last time as well.
Didn’t really know what changed things last time but will be looking at everything once more.
How about a bad rotor cap? Its only 2 month old....Put a new one on last time as well, MSD Brand. Is there a better one???
Thanks |

Backfiring once in a while.
When cranking no start, but black smoke coming out of exhaust.
Ignition module? you mean the thing on the back of the distributor???
No its not new, its the old one.
Is there a really good one we can buy???
What about a really good cap???
Will be working on it this weekend, after work.
No codes either, weird...
it did this once before

Ya i would try and get a new ignition module. Its the thing under the cap and sticks out the back. I got a oem replacement from west bay for mine. Just wanted to get a new one before the old one goes out. Thats what solved my friends problem with his iroc. Hope it works for you. Its a easy fix. Good luck _________________ Thirdgenless |

Most likely there wouldn't be black smoke from the ignition module.
Crane sells ones for a decent price at summit or there is the Delco module that's good too.
MSD cap is best.
Have you checked what the sensors read? Almost sounds like the coolant temp sensor for the engine went out. It would read something like -45deg all the time so it just dumps fuel in.
Check fuel pressure too.
Did the car normally puff black smoke out while cranking? |

Wouldn't lose of spark cause the engine to over fuel and in turn cause black smoke? _________________ Thirdgenless |

Nope never puffs smoke, when its running, just during the bouts with this problem. did this about two months or so ago .
Fuel pressure good, we have a gage mounted on the fuel rail.
Didn't check the sensors yet, will tonight if we have time.
That could be the problem, hit and miss signal maybe.
Should be a code, but non there.
How about arcing in the cap??? accross many terminals???

| When the coolant sensor goes open the ecm sees -45*. This doesnt set a code. You'd think it would, but i've never seen one set. Happens alot to gm vehicles. I've replaced quite a few of them on tbi pickups. Usually the truck won't start. Alot of times the harness is bad that plugs into the sensor as well. You can buy the sensor with/without the harness pigtail. |

Haven't see an MSD arc across the cap.
one way to find out is to put a timing light on each plug wire and while it's having it's fit, if the timing is pretty consistant (note that the computer will try to make timing adjustments while it's having a fit) you should be okay. If it arcs you'll see erratic spark somewhere. |

| Yeah, what diode? I've never heard of a diode used with MSD boxes. Even the instructions don't show any diode when hooked to EFI distributors. |

That's for old school large cap HEI not for the small cap EFI. Doesn't even look like it's for EFI at all. The modules in the small cap are 8 pin. Same with the Large cap HEI.
4 Pins for the ECM
2 Pins for the Pickup Coil
2 Pin for power/coil -
Bottom fo 14 and bottom of 15 are the correct schematics for our EFI cars. |
