....Jen's little LG4 is sceaming.
As was she,
SHIFT DAMMIT!!
How would a LT1 cam work in there with the CCC carb? It definately needs more oomph. |

You can stick most anything under a ccc carb. It's no where near as critical as an efi motor. The idle circuit is mechanical still, and WOT is basically set with the secondary metering rods. Basically only cruise is controlled by the ecm, and even that can be tweeked mechanically by moving the lean and rich stops.
BTW the intake is probably as good as a performer. So no need to change it either. Heads are decent and can be ported. Your 87 has the same heads as the tpi motor. I think 87 had the 9.3:1 compression.
You sure you want to go as mild as an LT1 cam??
Edit: Probably the biggest thing you can do is throw out the whole exhaust system. The pipes are totally restrictive and not sure if you looked at my manifolds but they're ridiculous. The passenger side manifold has a kink in the outlet that I can plug with 2 fingers. Even tpi exhaust manifolds would be a huge step up. |

Cool, I was thinking LT1 because it would be a dirt cheap swap. Definately will do an exhaust upgrade.
In 87 LG4 = Roller cam. |

LT1 Cam in a Peanut 305 with an edel carb yeilded 180HP with a very FLAT HP curve. I can post the dyno graph if you want.
It was in the S10. The LSA on that thing is like 117 and some I think are 119. Sounds like a wind up toy!
Be ware, it doesn't have the fuel pump lobe to drive a mechanical fuel pump. |

Please post it up if you can. Didn't realise the lack of a fuel pump lobe, that's easy enough to get around though. Did your 305 have the 416 heads Paul?
I thought Ian had a LT1 cam in his Birdie and it was most impressive at the dyno. Gonna have to do some more research. |

This was a bone stock 1987 LB9 motor (what like 190 horse with the TPI)with about 135,000miles. Just swapped the cam in and went.
They weren't 416s, they were centerbolt. I don't recall the casting.
Ian also had a stealth ram and I'm not sure what heads.
Will post tonight |

Ian's car is also a manual, the S10 was running thru an auto. I don't think that would account for 40rwhp diffrence.
The 416 heads and the TPI heads are supposedly the same castings, but 1 is centerbolt, but that is also the word from TGO, take it for what it is worth.
The stealth ram made a big diffrece, really my car and his car are very similar, even the cam specs, mine is just a bit bigger, and I had some mild porting done on my heads. He made 1hp more than I did, with less cam, and his tune was needing a lot of work.
I would put you at right about 200rwhp if you just stabbed the LT1 cam, without anything else. |

416 heads came on the '85 TPI motors which were non-centerbolts.
True it had an auto. |

Wow. I was going to chime in about my experience with the lt1 cam but it looks like it's well enough known.
I think the best part about the lt1 cam was the fact I picked it up for $10+shipping.
My heads are stock and I'm breathing through stock log manifolds on a stock tune. Just don't have to time or knowledge to tune it better and I think I'll at least have headers by dyno this year. We'll see what that'll do.
But for how cheap the lt1 is and the improvment it yields I don't think it can be beat. _________________

1987 305 LB9 Motor 135k stock heads/bottom end LT1 Cam Edelbrock Performer knockoff aluminum intake edelbrock 600cfm carb 700R4
Forgot hot lean it was down low. There is another 30-40HP with a richer tune and better carb I would think. |

Thanks guys, that is what I'm wanting for her car. About 200rwhp for about $50( gaskets + cam, exhaust has to happen anyway at some point). With the 5spd set up and 3.73 gears in back it should be lots of fun to motor around in but still have stock manners and resonable fuel consumption.
Besides, I could never let her Birdie be faster than my Camaro. |

| My 87 TPI car was 204.3 at the wheels with stock manifolds and a good cat back. I've since added a set of hooker headers. I wonder what the LT1 cam would do for me? |

Maybe a few more ponies after tuning. Would make a broader yet torque curve.
