I got my camaro back the other day, to my surprise, it still has an oil leak, even with a different motor. My oil pan is crushed-in about 4 inches deep. While i was installing my newly acquired iroc-z / z28 louver hood, i broke one of the fricken bolts inside the threads. Thats really nice. But the good news is, i bought 2 brand new front rotors from the crack-head junk yard guy down the road for $20! They were just sitting inside a box, inside a camaro, on his lot. I had no problems installing my new black inner door panels with black door handles. Pretty easy, just time consuming. So i've had a few bad things happen today, but, could be worse, nothing could have worked out. I'm having my rotors and brake pads installed tomorrow, as i do not have any brakes at all. I been using my e-brake to stop. Steve did a nice job at installing my engine, only 1 problem. The cover that goes over your torque converter, underneath the car, is gone. I was on the car ramps at work yesterday, (sunday) and i could see the torque converter! Not good. But other than that, great job. Thanks again.

Good to hear, but why did you put the damaged oil pan back on the new engine?

Good that you got her up and going again...

Dust covers for the bottom side of the bellhousing aren't really a big deal...you can probably find one in a junkyard....I think tony had one, but I'm sure he put it back in when he removed his starter one of those many times.

might give him a try though...

This is the oil pan that came with the engine, its not a NEW engine, its used with 96k miles. Runs great though. i hit 6k rpms twice in the last 3 or 4 days ive had it, dont wanna blow this up, cant afford another engine yet. right when the weather starts warming up after this next winter, i'm gonna be swapping in a 350 so i may need some direction. Since i will be doing it myself. Im considering buying a new oil pan, so this crap doesnt leak.

Very Happy .... it uh.. well, iit got all bent up in my closet at home and i threw it out..... Rolling Eyes i'll be keeping an eye out for one in the yards for myself. but yeah, you don't NEED one, especialy with an automatic.

also, danked: these MPFI engines don't make power that high in the RPM range. there is no reason to wind a STOCK 2.8 or 3.1 MPFI that high. with the stock cam they hit a wall (and stop making power) before that. the stock 92 3.1 hits it's peak HP (140HP)@ 4400 RPM. shifting any higher then that is pointless. i would not rev above 5K if you can avoid it. high RPMs are not good for these engines in stock form. now i am not saying hitting 6 grand a few times will grenade an otherwise healthy bottom end, but it sure is not a good thing. **

if you want it to last, shift @ 3k or less during normal driving and 4.4K if you are getting "on it". i think i can count the number of times i have hit 5k (in my 2.8 ) on both hands. again i am not saying that 5K shifts will blow your engine up, but i know I try to avoid it.

also one more thing: in refference to your brakes,you said you are "having them installed". do you have access to a tourque wrench? allan wrenches? if so those are the only "speacialty" tools required for the job. it is not that difficult and you could save some dough by doing it yourself. if you have a hynes or chiltons manual they both have pretty detailed instructions.

on the otherhand you have been witthout your camaro for some time. i can understand you probably realy just want to drive it riight now. i know i have been there. and the brake job probably won't cost that much.


**NOTE: the 1986 2.8 does not hit peak HP until 5100, however since peak TQ is reached at 3600 i still don't feel the need to shift up high. i know with my engine anyway i feel the most pull from 2200-3600, so i keep it in there if i am accelerating aggresivly.

yup, I'll vouch to that. The car will be faster if you shift well before 4500.

LMAO

Dinked, you'll be surprised to learn that with a small amount of common sense and some prevenative maintenance(add oil before it's empty), engines can last several years each. Don't have to shell out the bucks for a new one every few months.

Congrats on getting the car back. Hope it treats you well. Good luck with the brakes, whichever way you decide to do it (it's not a difficult job, I have to do the rears on my '89).

This last weekend up in BC, even as hard as I drove and as high as I wound mine out, I never reached 5K on the tach. I can vouch that the power starts to fall off after about 4500, if you wind it up more than that, you'll just end up being slower. Some of the others in the crew that were there expressed their suprise at how well the little sixer performed. As others have already expressed, there is no reason to wind the motor to its red line, it will last much longer if you don't.

I normally shift 3k or so, rarely go over it. I also check the oil on a daily basis and add accordingly. As for the brakes, my dad is putting them in for me, because even though i do have a chilton book, i have no idea how to install them. But i will be helping today just to learn so i dont have to count on him everytime i need to change brakes in my lifetime. Thanks for the info on the rpm range. Once steve brings me my other engine, ill be swapping oil pans and putting a new gasket because my other pan is in good shape.

Front's are easy. It's the back ones that get you. The front is just two studs and a fitting. Rolling Eyes
