Amorget mentioned at The Cruise that I should swap my 26 spline axle shafts for 28's. I just want confirmation that the axles are direct swappable. Also, will it be easier for me to find 28 spline posi/lsd units? I'm having a hard time finding any period! The only one I've been able to find is a 26 spline, but its a 2 series.
I'm seriously getting frustrated at all of these different rearend configurations. I need traction control now, before I loose my point standings in autocross!!! _________________ E30

You need whatever axles match whatever carrier you have.
If you have a 26spline carrier, you need 26 spline axles, and vise/versa wtih 28spline. |

| But whats the better/easier thing to do? Do disk/drum axles differ? Or would I need to find a drum axle? If there is a good rear end tech reference somewhere i would appreciate a link so I can learn without posting on forums. |

YES disc and drum axles are physically different on a 10 bolt. the flange that the wheel studs are pressed into is physically bigger around on a drum axle. if you use a drum axle for disc rears you will need to machine this edge down.
you CAN use a disc axle on a drum rear. you can NOT use a drum axle on a disc rear. |

hmmm.....
i have no explination for that.
ok, here is what i based that on. so far paul (twilightoptics) has replaced TWO axles in his car, both drum axles, both had to be lathed down. the first one hae got from me, came out of a 10 bolt 3 series posi from a 1986 originally. the second was of unknown junkyard fbody origin.
perhaps they switched mid generation to having them all the same. |

did you orginally have a 26 or 28 spline axles?
IIRC the disc and drum axles for 28's are interchangable. I'll do some research and see if that's really true. _________________

hehe, it feels pretty good once in the car with some axles stuck in it, pretty hard to turn one side only.
What was the spec, 55 ft/lbs?
Thanks again for it. |
