if there is 1 guy, r&ring a camaro engine, say.. 3.1 like mine, how long would it take him, if he was quite experienced and had a shop + all the equipment necessary? _________________ Towed amaro, 2nd engine blown spent $1500 not spending more. Decided not worth it. |

Depends on how much you paid!
Seriously.
Could take a day if you gave him the bare block and rotating assy, could take 2 weeks, depending on if its a paying job, how busy he is with customers, blah blah. |

| Agreed. To many variables. Why don't you just call your shop and ask him when he thinks he'll be done? |

| if he is doing it "on the side", as in between his other jobs for you, on the cheap. it could be a few weeks. if you are paying regular shop rate, and therefore are the same priority as other jobs it should only be a week or two if it is JUST a remove and replace, of a complete engine for another complete engine. |

| R&R for mine (3.1) at regular shop rate took a week. Dropped off on Sunday night, picked up Saturday morning. Actually got started on Wednesday or Thursday. Like Tony said, if it's at regular shop rate and on the "front burner" it should take a few days, on the side, much longer. |

its a skylark, and hes getting it done, im just wondering how long it should take. me and my dad did an engine r&r in our garage in a week, but we worked on it for like 14 hours each day, and i never did it before, but are these 3.1L's really difficult? i heard they can be if you dont know where all the vacuum lines go. anyways, keep up the work on the camaro steve and thanks again. _________________ Towed amaro, 2nd engine blown spent $1500 not spending more. at this point my 60*v6 has... 6-10vaccume lines on it. that is counting every end that plugs into somthing. i have two leaving the top of my TB that go to the FPR and the EGR selenoid, which also tees into something plugged into the coil (vaccumme timing advance?) and another from it to another thing on the coil. and one from somwhere to the thing that decides when to open the PCV. not counting the big line for the brake booster. i got a little confused, until i actualy LOOKED at it again, then it all made sense. if i had taken a picture before i took them off i would have been fine.
if you still have AIR injection, an evap can, and vaccume for accessorys (electric HVAC, or cruise control) then it will be alot more complicated. i have made every effort to reduce my engine bay clutter. |

| As others have pointed out, the better the deal you get, the longer it will take. A shop can't operate by putting off paying work to do favors. Wait till you have to put a car in paint shop jail. Some painters will take 6 months to 3 years.. yet actual painting of the car may only take a week. |

I could afford to do that at one time. While still in the Navy, I had a car stereo shop keep my car while I was at sea to install a system. Was great to have it "garaged" the whole time and have a new system when I returned. _________________ 92 Camaro

dude, i don't think you are giving him a bad deal at all. like i said before, if he was paying regular shope rate, and you had all the stuff at once that would be one thing. but this is a reduced price, under special curcumstances; hell, he has not even payed you yet. i would say you have gone out of your way to provide excelent customer service. i am giving you an a+ distinction.
when i said
| Quote: | | "i never got that. if youy are going to wait six months to paint my freaking car, call me in six months and tell me to bring it in, don't take it now and keep it forever....." |
i was reffering to the long wait that paint shopes put people through on a regular baisis. this comment was NOT directed at you, nor was it made in refference to your practices. perhaps i should have made that clear in my original post.
as for your language skills, baisc puncuation does not require a university education. most of us post at a high school level at best; i probably write on the forums at a 9th grade level, if that. poor spelling, and lack of capitalisation (even with proper nouns) has become excepted practice on message boards. you however; lack even the most baisic of grade school puncuation ability.(*see below) without question marks, commas, and the occasional period to break your words into easy to read ideas, many of us will not know what you are talking about. even if you use them improperly, as i do, they atleast help break your ideas up into readable chunks.
the only reason i bothered correcting your punctuation was because what you had said was important to the topic, and most of us would not have bothered to read it in it's original state.
all that being said i am sorry for any offense my corrections in the prior post, or my comments in this post may have caused. i do not seek to attack you (as danked has done a good job of that ), i simply speak what i feel needs to be said. it was not ment to be offensive, though i was prety sure you would be offended.
(* that is not to say you only have a grade school education, i am sure you are a smart guy, and probably speak verry well in person. just like many of us your inteligence does not shine through in your typing, that is all i meant by that) |

| No, you are not sitting on his car. You are also giving him one heck of a deal, about 1/3 the price I paid for my swap in labor (which I paid full shop rate). It's cases like this where I would let the mechanic take all the time he needs because he isn't making money on it. |

| Hope you dont think I was implying you were taking your time on purpose either. I too do this for a living. People think that you work on their car nonstop when it comes in. It doesnt work like that. Large job's take longer because you have to keep everyone else happy. Spending 12 hours keeping 1 person happy by doing their engine job is nice. But if you just pissed off 10 of your regular customers because you couldnt change their oil, you're out of business. It's better to keep the 10 happy and have the 1 guy upset. Problem with car repair, everybody thinks their car not working is an emergency. It's an emergency do mine first. Well thats what the other guy said too. |

geeze tony you were freakin rude, "you however do not even have basic punctuation" man.. thats brutal, i know hes doing his best, i went to his shop the other day and he had 2 other cars to do also. and i understand that, i was just trying to pressure him to get it done a bit sooner, hes a smart guy, he knows what hes doing, hes been doing it around 30 years, and he talks with a pretty high intellect in person. i have much respect for this man, very nice guy, patient and does everything in his power to please his customers. steve im sorry of ive caused you any heartache, and i think your doing your best to get it done. thanks again. _________________ Towed amaro, 2nd engine blown spent $1500 not spending more. I'd send the car back to you in pieces for doing this kind of shizzle. |
