Okay so today I was playing some geetar and surfing the web and my mouse stoped moving. Microsoft optical. Older, but worked great.
So I plugged it into the USB port in front rather than the mouseport in the back and it started working. Then I restarted the computer with the mouse plugged back into the MOBO on the back and as XP booted up... you see the mouse cursor just before the desktop showed up and it flashed blue screen and rebooted.
Did this 3 more times in all mouse configurations. Now it just came back on.
Where do I start looking for this problem? I've been getting the flash blue and restart alot especially if doing something like burning a cd/dvd and sometimes randomly.
If anyone wants to take this on I'll post all the stuff the computer has.
thanks

Do you mean that Windows is flashing the blue screen, and you have to reboot manually, or does it restart itself automatically.
If it's resetting like that, you might have a bad connection on your mobo. I had a PS/2 port on an old mobo go out once, bad connection caused the PC to reboot anytime you touched the plugs coming off the port. |

by default XP will reboot itself on an error state. This can be disabled, in the admin options though.
I would guess one of two things is happing. Something has gone hay-wire with windows, and you probably need a fresh install. Or you have a bad piece of memory or something like that, and when it is utilized things south.
You have done all the normal virus/adware/spyware scans, and made sure things are as healthy as can be? |

just to be clear: this only happens when the mouse is in a specific port? or does it happen on anny port?
what john says makes alot of sense, one thing i would try before replacing the ram, would be a new mouse. if it has a short curcuit that could cause an error state. probably not, but at 10$ you might as well. |

| Paul has been having issues other than with the moust though... Paul, if it works in the fron USB port, just leave it there, if you still have problems, look into thing further. |

The main problem is the automatic reboot of the system and not displaying the blue screen long enough to see anything on it.
The mouse thing is new and happened yesterday. It's plugged in the back of the mobo now and things are working fine.
I have two different brands, but the same type/speed of 512MB ddr333 ram.
I had a problem with the mobo video over heating (using an MSI card but I guess it was something that went through the mobo) when a fan stopped turning. It would do the same thing in the middle of games or something using lots of power. Replaced the fan and it's been fine since.
Now lately it starts that stupid reboot thing in the middle of recording and It's irritating as shizzle.
I was thinking maybe running out of power but I'm not sure.

You can turn off the auto-reboot. Right click on my computer, go to properties, IIRC it is on the advanced tab somewhere.
The error may not tell you much though, but you can always see. It could be that things are getting hot. Do you have a thermo sensor on the processor? |

| Ohh... 315W, that might be it. Check your temps right after it crashes. It should be in the BIOS somewhere, depending on your mobo. |

i had the same problem once too, do you know how to navigate through windows without mouse capabilities? if so, plug your mouse back into that slot where it didnt move, go into device manager, uninstall it, shut it off, plug it into another slot, and start back up, thats what fixed mine _________________ Towed amaro, 2nd engine blown spent $1500 not spending more. | I don't know about a thermo sensor, but I'll check temps via bios the next time it crashes. |

That'd be it. The Athlon T-Birds and XP's had heat problems, most needed an aftermarket heatsink and fan since the OEM units were not up to par. Once the 64's came out, they were a lot better. My Athlon 64 2800+ idled at 34C with the stock heatsink.
I'd say the most you'd ever want to run is 55-60C at full load on that. Get a new heatsink off of Newegg or something... should be $15-$20 bucks. Thermaltake makes good stuff. I'm using a Cooler Master right now. I've had problems with them in the past, but this one is great. |

It's only been a recent problem. Strange.
I didn't think that was all that hot anyways...
So order new heatsink for the athlon, and then do I need that goopy stuff or does it come with it? (I've put pc's all together, but that was with all new parts) |

It will come with thermal paste on it. Some guys swear up and down that grease (different than paste) is the way to go. Personally, I have never had a problem with the paste, except for one time I was dissasembling an old Gateway PC and the paste had actually glued itself to the chip, so when I removed it, the CPU came off the mobo (still attached to the heatsink).
Still worked fine after that though, and most stuff is higher quality than that OEM crap. I'd say just go with whatever they give you.
Edit: Damn... I used to remember what socket the XP's were. Try looking in your mobo manual, if you still have it. |

So it's a 462 Socket A
http://www.3dcool.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_22&products_id=1647
That one says: "Applications
Intel: Coppermine all, Celeron all AMD: Duron all, Athlon (TB) all, Athlon XP 2600+ and above"
Does that mean it wont fit my 1800+, or that the 2600+ NEEDS that kind of cooling? |

if you are confused, call your local computer hardware store and ask them what type of socket it is. i am sure they will be happy to tell you. |
