| Did the TH700-R4's that Chevy used in third-gens ever change? I was under the impression that everything after 83-84 was the same (except for the V6). However someone was telling me that in 86 they changed the tranny slightly. Is this anything, or what? |

the '87+ model 700R4 has some different things done to it integerally that make it better. I can attest to this as being true in real world also since I blew up a rebuilt '85 version, and never blew up the 150kmile '87 version.
Probuilt automatics say they only start with '87+ cores. |

Alright, thanks man. I have no idea what mine is, I was told it had been rebuilt, and I know they at least put a shift kit on it. That B&M plus the fact that my high rear gears mean I almost always drive in third is probably what killed it.
I think right now I'm going to pick up Scott's old '88 tranny, and run that with my stall converter. |

Doesn't matter what gear you're in. If you're not using Overdrive... keep the shifter in D. It helps slow wear and tear on the overdrive circuit which has fewer clutches.
B&M + 700R4 = Failure.
That's what I've been lead to believe anyways, and Chevymad says stay away from B&M in those too. |

I always keep it in D off the freeway simply because the response is sharper from it. OD always seemed sluggish in that car. I'm not going with another B&M, I'm sure of that much. I'm tempted to just run the new tranny without a kit, since I'm not planning on making it a permanent fix.
The biggest problem I have right now is that I'm not really set up for the swap. I don't have a tranny jack, and I only have one floor jack and one set of stands, so I'd have to drop a few hundred dollars just on that. |

I only have one jack and two jack stands + ramps
Get the car up on stand and 4x4s or ramp or something. I usually put the front on ramps, and the rear end housing on jack stands.
Then I have about a 6x10x2 piece of wood on the jack cup.
For raising the trans, I use 2x4 pieces. Put one under the rear most part of the pan. Lift the front up and put two under the front most part of the pan.. .etc etc until it's high enough to get the trans on the jack (Doing this under the car so when I jack straight up, the trans is right where it needs to be).
Did this in the snow once, mind you |

| How high up do you need to keep the car? About 1 ft? |

Just high enough so that you can slide the trans on it's oil pan under the car. You might use some wood and use the jack to jack up that side of the car to slide the trans under, then lower it back onto the stands/ramps/etc once the trans is under the tunnel. |
