so i was auctioning some junk on ebay today and i had knight rider playing in the backround.. anyway at one point i look up and i see the car start up, and much to my surprize KITT gave off a chevy salute Shocked i know they beat the hell out of that car, but this was only halfway through the first season!

made me feel better about my 18 year old car burning a little oil...
i watch too much television Rolling Eyes BTW shutup i know the show sucks Wink

Possible it might have been carbon deposits. When cars sit for a long time (like in studio lots...) they build up deposits and will put out a little blue smoke on startup and in the upper RPM range when cold.

Was KITT a TPI car or did it have something like Crossfire injection? When did Knight Rider premier as a TV show?

The cars were 82's and 83's IIRC. SO it would have been either crossfire, or a carb.

OE Chevy heads leak oil past the valve stems. It creates a little blue puff of smoke during startup. Aftermarket heads usually have upgrades with seals that eliminate the problem. Virtually every Chevy small block V8 does it to some extent.

All motors are designed to burn at least a little oil. If they didnt the guides and top rings wouldnt get lubricated. Many v/8s 1qt per 1000miles was acceptable in a new car. The manufacturers have had to cut that back because of the catalytic convertor, but even today GM says 1qt per 100 gallons of gas is within spec. In a 8.1l truck thats probably not even 1k miles.

kitt was actually 350 carbed,do a search and readup on old articles and such, from what ive read they took the 305s out and put in 350s ,dunno if its true or not,but in the movies where they dont fast forward the acceleration, you can tell its not a stock 305 145 HP just doesnt move a 3500 pound car like kitt accelerates in some of the shows.

well, i watched "under the hood" on my KR season one DVD... many of the cars were equiped differently. one had a "BIG engine" for going 0-60 real fast. then they hasd lighter ones for jumping. the "computer car" was the one with all the gadgets for interior shots.. it was crossfire, as well as most of the stunt cars

Rolling Eyes

-------------------

the two stunt cars ive seen, that still exist, both had the modified 350 and had some wird gadgets and gizmos attached to them. jay olbergs car was also set up like this i believe.

im sure some of the cars had xfires.
but, most likely very few. crossfire fuel injection cars were not even for sale in the state of california (although i guess technicaly universal did not buy them like a regular consumer would.....in fact, they those cars do not have any state required testings or anything since they are for the movies). ok thats all i have to say for now Shocked

Is that the season 1+2 combo? I've got that but haven't seen a season 1 only.

Tony....didn't you also say that they got the first two black Trans AM's that rolled off the Assembly plant in Van Nuys for the 1983 model year?

While I was thinking about it......I've seen 3 crossfire cars in Junkyards...all F bodies.....I've NEVER seen one that was a working vehicle...just thought I'd point that out. Corvette got it for I think 82 and 84 but they had a 350 in them.

yes the knight rider team got the first two 1982.5 Trans ams to roll off the assembly line.

----------------

for your info tony, if you are planning on buying season three, the audio is just about messed up on every episode. for some reason when they were remastering it they left out alot of the sound fxs and stuff. like when kitt turbo boots you are supposed to hear the 'booster' sound....but its silent. they are aware of the problem and are fixing it. if you do buy it, dont worry, once they fix the problem you can contact them and they will send you a package to put the messed up dvds in and they will send you a new fixed one.

season four is fine.

------------

i do have a crossfire fuel injection unit in my 1982 trans am. the 305 has been replaced with a 350. its a interesting set up, problem is they are a pain in the ass to get tuned and working properly. however, if you can get it tuned up right they work great. there is a club dedicated to the xfire, if you google crossfire vault you will find their web forum address....alot of those guys are even running whats called a cross ram set up (diffrent manifold and some other stuff i think, its been a while).

with any luck, if we can get the stupid 87 fixed soon, maybe Ian and I (and a few others) can get the 82 going again. i think we came to the conclusion to just swap in a TPI set up for ease of use. once the engine bay is done and i can get the body pannels fitted, i will have Ken come and fit the nose to the car Cool

if you need any xfire parts there is an untouched 83 xfire in the damascus upullit (shifter is gone Sad )

Tony, yes im building a replica KITT as well as a General Lee. working hard to the charger into the very busy and booked body shop.

as far as the 82 TA goes, its a fully optioned out trans am and it does have the correct shifter as well as roundish shift nob. however, the 82 trans am came w/ those 200c 3 speed automatics. we were talking about doing a 4 speed overdrive 700r4. in that case, i assume i would need a new shifter to accomodate for it.

i do need some other parts thought, when i get home tonight i will PM you.
