Sometimes you're in the right place at the right time. The other day that was me. Obviously we sell batteries at my work. Well they have a shelf life that they can stay up there and as soon as that's expired they're supposed to be shipped back to exide for credit and recycling. If we miss the deadline then we're SOL and we do what we call "Bear Cat"ing. Obviously that's when it's past it's ship return date and we mark them down to 24.99 + core. Well one of the new managers at my store Bear Cat'ed a bunch of batteries and he mixed up the batteries "manufacter date" and it's "ship date."

I just got a 4 month old gel cell deep cycle battery for 24.99.

Wahoo.

Gell cell batteries have very tight tolerances for charging voltage. Your factory alternator will regulate too high and overcharge the battery. I'm not sure you really want it in your car...

Really? That's kind of disheartening. The voltage guage on my bird is always pegged at 13v

Are they used for something else if not good in cars?

All I know is I bought two Red top optima's, not the yellow top that is some kind of a fancy deep cycle.
But they are awesome, better than any other battery I have had before, although they are about twice the price, got one that has 720 cca and one new generation red top that has 800cca both have massive reserve power.
I would recommend these to anyone who wants to spend $130 or so on a battery. Not sure or know the brand you have but mine are a A+.
One is in the 88 iroc, the other in the 89 suburban.

I've got one of the very first Exide Orbitals in my truck. Still going great. At work we have a red top optima that we've used as a jump starting battery since 95. Still working. Had to solder new posts on it cause the cables cut off the old ones. Also using it to start a motorhome with a bad starter it drew so much juice it burned the side posts out. I've seen it put out almost 1200amps before.

BTW Optima and Orbital spiral wound batteries aren't "gel cell". I see people call them that all the time. Gel cells have the acid in jelly form. The spiral wound batteries use liquid acid same as a normal battery but its only about a tablespoon per cell, and its absorbed in a fiberglass matting that is wound between the plates. They call these AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries.

"The more you know" Laughing

That's interesting info about the "gel cell" thing. Everyone at my work calls them gel cells so I just started calling them that. Just purpetuate the cycle. Smile

That takes care of the voltage regulation issue. Sounds like you got a great deal!
