|
|
About two weeks ago I "loaned" xophertony my alternator for his 2.8L bird, as his crapped out on him on the way to school. I got it back last tuesday from tony (he got a new alternator)..I hooked up my battery again, and the alternator...tested the lights and put the key in ACC to make sure the ECM lights went through there "test" illumination. I had plenty of power. I went out to the car tonight to make sure everything was ok. I had brake lights, headlights, park lights, I put the key in the ignition to ACC and made sure all the test lights illuminated... that worked fine (even had turnsignals). I noticed the tach started jumping between 0 and 1500 rpm fairly rapidly and stuff started flickering and then went dead. Since then, I don't get headlights, brakelights, nothing illuminates or works with the key in ACC position and no power to start. I disconnected both Pos and Neg battery cables and reconnected them (and made sure both were tightened down. Still Dead. The only time I get power is if I have the battery charger hooked up to it. I charged it tonight starting at 7pm and just went out now to disconnect it with a 40 amp charge. Battery still isn't accepting a charge.
Symptom of a bad/dead battery or is there something else I should be aware of? Checked my fuse box, nothing seemed to smoke or seemed blown or burnt out.
I didn't take note of it when I disconnected the alternator, but I have a black wire with a direct lead to the battery and a red one, both of which that I seem to remember removing from the "bat" post on the back of the alternator (the only post that sticks out) Is there another post or place I should look to put one of these wires. I seem to remember Tony's bird having a similar setup and we connected both wires to that one post, and it worked just fine.
I feel really retarded asking this...it seems like if I so much as breathe on that f***ing camaro, something else goes wrong.
In other news, I got the carb rebuilt, just have to get it back on and see if she'll finally fire.........but I need electrical power first to make that happen....
This sucks. _________________

It may be taking a charge but it may not actually be charging back up. Take it to a schmucks/vatozone/etc to have it load tested to see if it's taking a charge. Free and if it's bad it'll almost always come up bad within the first 10 minutes or take an hour to fully charge. _________________

Did you ever get a chance to look at the Alt on your old bird tony? If so what was the verdict? _________________

I had a battery problem last summer and It seemed that my battery was just bad. schmucks told me it was fine but it would literally drain just by turning the lights on. so I got a new one and problems solved. _________________ 1983 Z-28 5.7 LT1, T56, Headman headers, BW 9 Bolt Posi Disc, WS6 suspension

This one has a 15mo replacement warrenty, so I may just have it load tested at United Battery (where I got it) if its fubar, then they'll replace it. _________________

THE BATTERY LIVES......I have lights and signals again..... I put it on the charger at 8 last night and just checked on it..seems to be fully charged.
BTW Tony: got the alternator wiring situation figured out....both red and black went on the protruding post. _________________
