I did a minor rebuild to my q-jet. I took the 3 major pieces apart, cleaned all the carbon out of them, replaced a green plunger-like thing, and put new gaskets on. After I started it up, it idled at a nice RPM, and fairly steady, but I hear popping from the exhaust.

This is typical of a lean condition, correct? What did I mess up? lol.

Also, I made a set of plug wires with some MSD wires and boots, and I'm not completely sure if a couple of them are fully seated right now, but I doubt that would make the same sound, would it?

It does the popping a lot at idle and coming down from revving. It probably does it while revving as well, I just dont hear it as much.

naw, popping out the intake is a sign of a lean condition usually... because it gets hot and pre-ignites with the intake valve open.

But if the popping is out of the exaust, it could be exesivly rich, and the extra fuel is igniting in the exaust.

This may sound dumb but make sure 5 and 7 plug wires are right.

Bad powervalve?

Did you adjust the idle mixture with a vacuum gauge?

It is more-so in the exhaust, I havent had problems with out the carb.

It actually only tends to do it right after I start it up. It does it once or twice (not bad, it just irritates me) and then smooth sailing from there.

I didnt adjust the idle mixture or anything. I did not move any adjustable parts, from what I know, they are all still set at the factory settings.

When I sniff the tailpipes they seem slightly rich at idle, but not excessively. I guess dyno will tell, eh ? Wink

I checked 5 and 7 and they were correct. I made sure they were all clipped on all the way and I guess one of them was slightly off and now it idles a little smoother atleast, but it still does the popping once or twice thing.

Should I even be worried about this? I'm just afraid that over time it's gunna blow up the cat.

Only if we find more people. Right now I don't know if we have enough. I'm going to call Steve tomorrow and talk to him.
