Thumbs up Spent today working on the formy. Totally redid the ignition. I have so many different brands of ignition parts now. Shocked Anyway, My cheesy Accell distributor started acting up again. Never buy accell, their quality control doesnt impress me much. So, I decided that since aftermarket distributors have gotten kind of spendy, I would just put a pertronix unit in one of the few old GM points distributors I have laying around. Tried pertronix in my 454 and that seems to work dandy. Last week I get the pertronix module, bead blast the distributor housing, disassemble, clean, lube the advance mechanisms etc. Get the thing all together.. then read the instructions.. Laughing "Check coil with ohmmeter, must have at least 1.4ohms resistance" Crap, check out my jacobs coil.. 0.4 ohms.. hmm. Whats the resistance in my meters wires.. 0.2ohms.. Talk about no resistance! No way the pertronix will fire that.

Ran into this with my truck a few years ago too. Bought a mallory unilite for it.. to replace the accell that I had in the formy(didnt like it then.. but if I don't throw it away or sell it, i'll use it in the future). Only to find out that it wouldnt run the jacobs coil either, cured that with a with a MSD6a.

This time I had to do the same thing. Only I bought a Mallory Hyfire6a box. Slightly smaller... and red(crimson i say!) Embarassed Mounted up real nice above my charcoal canister.

So I get this all together and slap the timing light on her. The points distributor I used is the original 68 327 dizzy from the motor in the formy. No wonder they used to only have 4* initial timing. This dizzy had 44* of mechanical advance and 10* of vacuum Exclamation So I had to take her out again, and change the lower advance plate with one out of a different dizzy. This one is from a 74 and only has 30* of mechanical. Put initial at 8* and no pinging.. but WOW Shocked Kicks the rear out all 3 gears! Pulled so hard from a start I heard something crack or fall off! Laughing This is with a 50lb bag of dog food, case of bottled water, and a complete set of dishes in the back seat. Motor runs super smooth too. Idle's better, so far everything seems better. I think most of it has to do with timing, but the hyfire couldnt hurt.

Didnt quite get to workin on the truck today though. Was planning to work over the timing curve on it too. But I did manage to prune all my apple trees between stints on the car.

Anybody else get productive?? Dyno's coming!!

Well, Paul and I got some tuning on the camaro today.

We learned a couple of important lessons.

#1, I had my computer already set up to datalog Spark Advance, but had never noticed.

#2, It is possible to have your car run (and actualy run pretty well), with 35* of spark at idle, and only 27* of spark at WOT.

So, I am now running modest numbers. 25* of advance at idle, 33-34* at WOT. Sometime this week I need to get the new pressure regulator spring in, and nail down some WOT tuning.

Here's a couple pics of where I hid the crimson box...

Just took a drive to longview with it. I've really got a hard time keeping under the speed limit now. I'll bet I don't use more then the top 1/2" of pedal now. I'm sure the torque under the curve really increased with the timing difference. And with the hyfire she's oh soo smooooooth.. really sweet. I'm happy!

very nice Brandon. Glad to hear that she is running so good. And did you notice that I didn't even mention how good the red looks on there?

Cool

Ha ha

hehe - well my magic blue wire is still keeping my 'internally grounded' wipers grounded. That is pretty subtle though. The jacobs coil on the other hand - very blue and shiny, hmmm... must have some red paint around here somewhere.
