Mandrake is a good one to learn on, it should come with both the Gnome and KDE desktops, which will make learning a bit easier.
Also, as you start downloading programs to get going, look for things that have RPM installs, those will be easier than usering the tar.gz and installing them thru the command prompt. |

Mandrake is pretty nice, the KDE environment is set up a lot like windows, just runs a bit slow (at least on version 9 400Mhz AMD system) and is more stable. My RedHat server at work is 462 days continous run time and counting. _________________ '88 Formula

well, this is my first post from my linux box! i am successfully running Mandrake 10.1 with KDE 3.2 desktop (I'll try gnome out eventually)
i am running it on a celleron 900MHZ. that's celleron 1. with 33MHZ front side bus. it is slow as hell to boot, but is lightning quick for internet. this site has never loaded so fast. i am using Konqueror browser, but intend to switch to mozilla firefox in a few minutes.
right now i am dual booting this (my primary) computer with XPSP2 as well. perhaps when i get back from my trip on the 30th i will install it on my server (a 233MHZ PII) and see how it does on a server.
OMFGexplosion!!! it just spell checked my post! _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

| I beleive that almost all the linux browsers do tabs, even netscape. You can also use the tabed view, for file structure browsing, if you use the Konquer for file browsing. |

how do i transfer files to my windows hard drive?
and is there a "my computer" type of view i can use. so far i found an "explorer" type view, but only for the "/" drive (linux drive). i am pretty sure since i am using NTFS on my windows partition this will be imposable, a guy at school was telling my linux can read FAT32. is there a way to read NTFS? |

Linux can READ NTFS, but not write to it (well, I got mine to write, but it tooks tons of custom work.
Get me on gtalk tonight, I go over how to set it up to read your NTFS drive. |

well, konquer was the browser included in Mandrake. so i downloaded firefox... had to go in as "root" to put in in that directory... now i am going to tackle trying to copy my firefox settings from my windows partion over to my linux partition.. then re-download macromedia... log back in as root to install it... this is awful labor intensive.
i'll get the hang of it eventualy. and now i am no longer stealing from microsoft. |
