Ok, here's the situation........I was at foster U-pull it the other day, getting a core support for a friends 76 camaro that got wrecked and while there I looked through some 3rd gens to see if I found anything useful for my car. I was looking through a 85 with the non-AC heater box, and I noticed something about the dash..........the outer part closest to the door didn't have heater vents, only the two on top closest to the dash pad. The same was true with the drivers side...
My dash has a huge crack in the middle of it. The dash pad is in near perfect shape however. The question is: is changing the whole dash a bad idea? I'd like to put in as many "delete" options or "non-power" options into my car as possible (just a personal preference) and the less air vents or ducts I have the better. Just trying to maintain that "Base model" look inside and out. At the very least I"m taking the heater box and blower motor out of this one in the junkyard, so I was curious if it'd be worth the while to take the dash also because its in good shape. I just don't particularly want to get myself in over my head, so if anyone's done this before who can offer support or advice, its desired.

i half pulled the dash in my sisters 89 firebird (sold long ago) to replace the heater core. it was not THAT hard. but i never removed it all the way, just took it far enough to squeeze in the new core.

heres what i would do:
pull the one out of the junkyard car. now you KNOW how much work it is.

if you decide it is not worth it to do the swap leave the dash @ upullit, and take the vent blockers off, they attach from the rear somhow, they canot be removed from the front. then remove the pad from your dash and put the vend blockoffs in.

if you decide it is worth it, then buy the dash and do it.

just be prepared to spend AT LEAST a full day on this. i only removed the dash from the firewall and slid it forward, you are going to have to disconnect ALL that wiring, and transfer all of those relays and dash mounted equipment over.

good luck.

I actually have done it before........come to think of it......Sellmanb (bobby) was with me when I did it on an 89 RS in the junkyard. I was missing a deep set metric 10 to get the instrument cluster out, so I had to remove most of the dash and do it from the backside. It wasn't real fun, but i definately have to remove the center console before I attempt it. I remember having to cut some wires, so I'll have to take notes on which ones. I may just do what you suggested tony and take the block off plates....I'm not sure it has them, I think they're actually molded into the dashboard. Anyways we'll see.

If you get the base model type dash... remember to get all the ducting work or you'll have or old two vent tracts on the outside that blow just into the dash area!

the vent block offs are not molded into the dash. but they are not "snap in". they are mounted from the rear of the dash.

i have a base model dash sitting in my garage and the block offs look like they are molded. i tried removing them and i couldn't get them off.

nah, I actually kind of dig the look of the pre-90 3rd gen dash, besides, that's more time, money and work than I want to put into the interior right now. Just putting my 'delete' options in, redoing weatherstripping all around, making the thing run. then I'll worry about paint/body. After that, I go to my motor/trans/rear swap. Then my car should be done.
