|
|
*TRUMPETS SOUND* As promised, I finally got on it and took some pictures before I began work on it.
A nice open shot of the hood and front valance. Note the GM approved hood holder-opener...
It didn't show up really well, but the surface rust spot is where there's a large softball size dent on the drivers door. I rolled most of it out yesterday, but it still has some wrinkles. That door didn't used to shut all the way. I fixed that and now its stuck...lol.
A shot from the backseat. The gauge cluster is actually out of a 89 RS, the orginal one is pictured later
Center console with PW and PL switches and factory clock. Will trade straight for one without a clock or the lock and window switches.
Aforementioned gauge cluster. I don't need it, do you? Make me an offer.
A shot from inside the garage. The motor in the lower right corner is a Toyota 2TC that ran when removed from a 77 carolla. I have the 4 speed that goes to it also. Know anyone who wants it? $50 and they can have it. or any SBC they have lying around the garage I'll trade up for the motor and tranny.
this is the last thing the pedestrian saw before he had 3500lbs of F-body on him.
yet another inside shot.
while this looks to be an otherwise normal motor, this 2.8L actually has a blazing 1hp (when I push it) and .5 ft/lbs torque. I can really burn rubber when I wear the addidas with no soles left on em, oh man..got traction?
another shot from behind.
Shot of the front and nose in sunlight. Note the Z/28 hood sans lovures. I'm not sure if I want to keep the hood or not, as it acts as true ram air for the motor. if someone has a RS or Coupe hood the same color, I may trade you straight across.
Hope you enjoyed this little tutorial. _________________

It exists!
Coolness. Looks like a good starting point for a build up. Do you have an overall plan of what you are going to do with her?

Isnt that another 52hp Bart special in the engine cradle? Looks like you've got some work to do. I bet that yota has nearly as much power as that carbed 2.8. Time for some parts swappin! |

Yeah, its gonna be a project for sure. I'm not in an enormous hurry to make this car fast. For now I'm just going to get it running, get some minor body work done on it, new weatherstripping all around. convert to manual windows and locks, and just drive the thing while I save money for what I want to do. I'm thinking right now going with 3.73 gears with either an Eaton posi or mini-spool, TKO 5 speed, and a 350 or 383 pushing 400 crank HP. Basically I want a third gen that's more powerful than the fastest stock 4th gen. Probably when I change gears, I'll ditch the drums in back and go with 4 wheel disc.
What sold me on the car was the color and the lack of spoiler on it.....and its made the same year I was born. _________________

Got the driver door unstuck, removed the door pannel, removed the lock rod, outside door handle and lock, (how do you disconnect the cables that go to the mirror from the inside latch pannel?) and finally cranked the thing over today...cranks but won't fire, even with a blast of starter fluid down the venturi. now I get to decipher vaccum diagrams, and see what i can learn about the carb with the extra one I have.
Been pretty easy so far *crosses fingers* _________________

| The mirror stays in one piece with the cables and interior joystick all attached. Just two nuts to remove from the inside of the door and snake it out. |

if you remove the joystick from the mirror you might as well throw the whole thing away and get a new one. it will NEVER work again. trust me i know. my mirror is JB wealded into place due to the fact that no other junkyard joystick would work... crying shame. _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

well orginally, I was going to ditch both the PL motors and PW motors and just go to crank windows (I'm not a fan of power options) but I got both the window motors working relatively smoothly.....so I'm not sure. The drivers door has some damage to it, a majority of which I was able to roll out, but you can still see some wrinkles. The hinges are shot and are the reason why the door saggs so badly... so they definately need to be replaced, as does the door latch assembly, but the actual door itself isn't in bad shape...I found one that is almost an exact match up at All American Classics in Vancouver, but just for the bare door (no glass, window motor, etc...) they want like $125...which is a little outrageous, considering I can get one with everything attched from u-pull it for about half that. _________________

all american classics is just real satisfied with everything they have, they don't want to sell it, they like it where it is . as far as hinges go DO NOT get stock replacements. get the hinge repair kit from top down sollutions www.top-downsolutions.com they kick ass. i put one on the drivers door of my whitebasebird. door is solid as a rock now... can't wait for summer to do it to the GTA. it's doors sag. not real bad, but bad enough. |

How tough was it to put one of their hinges in? I've only just replaced the door pins which do a pretty good job... |

the hardest part, a real PITA, was grindint the old pins off.... what a chor, i had a dremal out there for like 45 minutes... that is the real time consuming part... the good news is that enen once you have completly removed the pin head, the shaft still holds the door on, so you can break the project up over multiple days if you run out of time...
you do have to remove the door. this is pie with an engine hoist, or a big friend. the hard part was preparing the old hinge for it's new pins.. i had to sand for like 20 minutes... then it was just bolting things together... but you will NEED the "GM spring replacement tool" or you can't get the doorsprings back in. and it sucks having an unspring door it took me around 7hrs, but i did weather stripping at the same time (easy with the door off) the hinge part was probably four. now that i know what i am doing i could probably cut that down to two.
the great thing about this is that you do not have to reallign the door, once you do the hinge repair it should back to factory alignment. unless you have messed with it before to compansate for the sagging.....
if anyone ever needs it by the way i have a door realignment tool i'll be happy to lend out... just don't ruin the pretty paint
what i need to borrow (or buy) is the spring replacement tool. my 86 has one unsprung door |
