Hey guys, just had a question for yah. My slow-maro, LO3 RS, 1991, is now smoking under heavy acceleration...so I know my rings are only getting worse. My question is, until my new crate, in hopefully a few months, is there any additives you reccomend?

Right now I'm running 10-40 syntec with two add ins of 20-50 syntec to thicken her up. I wonder if thats making me smoke worse by adding more oil pressure. I dunno...

any help would be great. I so want my 383.

Keep checking the dipstick! Cool

I think, but not sure, that synthetic would be more apt to passing by the rings, wait for Chevymad to chime in!

Synthetic will burn more. You want a heavy weight oil. You can add Stop Smoke or STP. These are safe but all they do is thicken the oil a bunch so it doesnt slip past the rings as easily. If the motor is something you really don't care about, and just want to last awhile longer get Engine Restore. The stuff actually does work somehow. But I'd never put it in a motor that doesnt allready have a problem. Looks like you're pouring glitter in the crankcase. Stuff has alot of visible solids in it.

I put Engine Restore in a customer's van once on request. The van was burning tons of oil and would foul out 2 plugs every month. Put the restore in it and it went all year without fouling a plug. Lasted till he sold it Wink . I put some in a Case diesel tractor of dad's. Before the tractor wouldnt start without starting fluid. Compression was too low to fire. After running with restore it fires up on its own, no problem.

Reason I wouldnt put it in a good rig, I can imagine where all those "solids" end up. They could possibly block oil passages etc, and even if I was going to rebuild the motor later, I have no idea if that stuff would clean out of those passages. But if its in a 305 you're goin to junk anyway, go ahead.

thank you guys. Chevymad, I have had friends who swear by that stuff on their high mileage pre crate motors....

So synthetic is burning more eh? So what do you think of 10-40 castrol high mileage gtx and some engine restore for my next oil change?

Thanks again!

So I did as I said, putting castrol 10-40 dino oil and a can of engine restore and I have been SO happy with the results. I've been running her through the gears and have been unable to move the dipstick reading and have noticed little to no smoke or smudge. Great temporary fix.

Thank you very much chevymad and everyone for their input. Also, geese the public pays a lot for a wix filter and some restore, thank god I get dealer cost.

Almost 14 dollars cheaper than list price.

I wonder if I'm gonna miss my james bond cloud that I would blow at tailgaters. It's amazing how thick a cloud of 20-50 syntec can get at 4000 rpms.
