Hi all..
I did finally get that 400sbc from the engine warehouse and so far its been a prety good motor BUT the gas mileage.. On two trips so far down to Aberdeen my best gas mileage has been 11.88 MPG. Just wondering if that sounds about right or what? The RPM at 70 is at about 3000.
The motor has 9.1 compression, stock 82 intake and exhaust manifolds, looks like a 3 inch cat back system, stock trans (I believe) and cat. Oh yeah and the cam is 292 intake and 288 exhaust.

Hoping to get a good set of headers and intake soon. In the spring paint and body Very Happy

With that cam, and that RPM you're doing GREAT!

I've got some heavy tuning and turn 3800rpm at 70mph and get 10-11 average in my 355.

I assume you have no overdrive with that RPM?

Well you guys definately make me feel much better now. I knew there had to be a reason I didn't mod my motor heavily, $2.63 per gallon and 22 mpg on my last tank city driving with an egg under my right foot Very Happy

will a six speed improve your gas mialage? what will it do for power/acceleration?

i am pricing out my 3.8turbobuick swap and am trying to decide on a rebuilt or used T5 or a rebuilt/used T56.

I was kinda worried that someone would tell me that with that cam and all my mileage would be good Laughing .
I have heard from a fe people that the 200R transmission wouldn't live long behind the 400 so when it does go out I'm thinking of probably getting the 700R4.
If we ever get a clear day again I will be doing something with my cat...I hear that could help some, plus bring me a few more ponys maybe Very Happy

If you get a 700, get a probuilt automatic. A stock 700 will roast behind a 400. I broke my "built" 700 from a local reputible shop and it broke behind a 240hp 350.

The 6 speed will help with milage if you're trans/gearing is out of whack for milage. IE >>> no overdrive, steep rear gears... like me.

The 6 speed is a double overdrive. The T56 from '93 has liek a .80 6th gear OD. 94-97 has a .50 6th gear. Lower RPM, less fuel used. In theory.

I would really like the 6 speed BUT I have a wife thats not into cars at all so getting any money out of her is a pain. Laughing .
I don't mind the 11 MPG so bad around town (well..actually its probably allot worse in town) but on road trips DAM!! I'm even thinking of maybe getting an old POS honda or something for work.

Does any have anything to say about western washington firebirds? I'm thinking of joining.

I would go six speed. Not just because shifting makes me horny, but because it will probably suit your build perfectly. T5 would take a lot of build work to handle your motor, six speed, in good shape, should cope well with putting that to the ground, plus the parasitic power loss of a t56, (i believe) is better than the 700r4, which chevy power magazine studied, and the 700r4 has over 50hp draw on the motor alone.

Gas mileage gain? It depends on how much you love to shift. I'd probably keep it in 2nd or third around town just to reverberate and rumble my way past everyone. Crank up some Tool on the stereo and just stare at all those civics.... Twisted Evil Mention this to the wife, on how it would improve your rep around town. I'm sure she'll fork over the tranny money after you beg.

I'm becoming a post whore.

I'm glad you guys liked that. I wish I was kidding.

Sometimes I stare at my 700r4 shift plate and frown, knowing full well I'd cheat on my car with an IROCZ 5 speed in a second.

Here's to getting my nooby ass to a meet soon. Down the hatch and hey! I could be 21 by then. You know what that means? Asphalt and liquid courage!

Ultimate combo.

As stupid and in-mature as we all seem. That is the one combination we never do. Cars + booze = BAD, very bad.

When we drink, we drink (ohhh do we drink).

When we drive, we drive it like we stole it.

But never together. :nods:

I never meant drinking and driving.

I will, however, do burnouts on private land and then drink a stiff dark ale in the after smoke of my roasted tires.

But no, never ever ever do I find any pleasure in putting innocent people at risk for my own actions. I didn't mean the joke in that way.
