a guy at work has one for sale. i cant remember if he said 283 or 289. he said all it needs is a carb/dist/ and water pump. he wants 200 bucks for it. i was thinkin bout possibly buyin it and takin the 305 out and puttin that in if its in good running order. i dont know much about engines so any info on it would be helpful.

289 = Furd

I don't think I would mess with a 283. To make good power you will have to turn it at pretty high rpm's.

im not really lookin for power right now. im lookin for a motor that will last me for a bit till i can save up and get a 350. i dont wanna pay to rebuild the 305.

There are still 350s out there for less then $200. Just keep your eyes open. I picked up a running 93 longblock just a few months ago for $100.

If you just need a 350 to rebuild I have a mexican shortblock 350. Should be a 4 bolt(think all mexican crate 350s are). $100 But you'll have to build it before it'll run. Some like the mexican motors, but as long as I have an american block to build I'll use that instead.

thats what my prob is. i dont know how to rebuild a motor or do i have the space. the 283 is running and just needs a carb dist and water pump. i need to find a good running motor to drop in before the 305 takes a dump on me. i dunno maybe ill pass it up and see what else comes up. what i was plannin on doing was puttin the 283 in and usin it till i get a 350 built up.

If the 283 is all original the heads won't have any accessory holes in the ends. You won't be able to bolt your brackets etc on them. You could use it if you bolted your 305 heads to it though. But now you're into it for gaskets at least. Do you have headers? If not your exhaust manifolds won't bolt to the 283 heads either, and the dipstick is on the wrong side and interfers with the manifolds. I was able to make my 327 work with the dipstick problem by crushing the stick against the head with the manifold. But I could only check oil when it was cold cause the dipstick would get red hot.

Is your 305 completely dead? Maybe it makes more sense to just repair it till you can get the 350 built. If it is dead and you have to have something that runs soon there should be other 305s out there for next to nothing.

its not completely dead but its on its last legs im thinkin. i might be able to make it last longer,im gonna stast car pollin with a friend. he will drive one week then ill drive. hopefully it will last till i get the money for a new motor.
