So in the new places there aren't many cable jacks, no crawl space that I have found... so I need to hook up wireless for two laptops and a desktop.
Anyone have any experiances/preferences with brand and what I need?
I need the wireless router.
Desktop Card (are the USB ones okay?)
And 2 notebook cards.
Mike I know you just did alot with this...
Linksys, Dlink? etc? Or just Frys and what's on sale? |

| Yup, you should be fine with any brand name, I would avoid the super cheap Fry's special if it is a non-name brand. I would also really think about going with the 802.11g stuff now, that it is out, don't bother with the old tech, since you are needing to get everything. |

I have linksys wireless G router / 4 port switch running 128 bit WEP encryption and I picked up a $12 usb adapter for the wifes' notebook from Frys and it works just fine
The G router is almost 5 times faster than 802.11b, but can also interoperate with any 802.11b device (at 11Mbps)
These are about 60 bucks now
The PCI adapters for desktops are good if range is a problem, they have a good size antennae.
I know Comcast wants to charge you for any and all PCs hooked up by assigning a static IP so perhaps avoid any of these types of discussions if your ISP does the same. |

That is what the router should solve, you still get on DHCP address form them, which the router receives, all the internal PC's get private address', basic NAT'ing at work. Unless you somehow set the router into some sort of bridging mode, there is no way your ISP will know that you have anything other than a single machine (as you are just using 1 IP, and 1 machine connected to it.
FWIW, I had to call Comcast support, and explained my setup to them, they seemed to have no problem with it. |

Had three computers running at the folks house with just a hub. Guess for the extra $5 now you get 5 IP addresses. It used to be that it was $5 per computer. From Comcast, which is what we have here too.
Looks like Linksys is the way to go. Found a router/notebook card kit for $99. And Frys has a PCI card from them for $39.
Thanks guys! |

Ok first of all, where exactly are you living now hehe - surprised no one called you out on that or maybe I am just behind the times.
Like several others that have chimed in I used linksys equip. I also have comcast and have had absolutely zero problems with setup or operation (and no extra charges). Give me a call if you need anything.

Everytime I drive around datalogging I get that popup box coming up. "New network detected! Hold on while we connect!" Like I care! Geez... _________________

ok dlink and netgear are the only two you want to pick from. i work in this industry. you need a wireless router preferably b/g (both) compatable. also usb card do work but they generally are b and only 11 mbps so the other types of cards which are g type are best and can get 54 or even 108 mbps _________________ 1990 Camaro RS, Black w/ Red Int, V6 3.1L, Auto, T-Tops. |
