Sooo.... the red camaro tried to go up in smoke. Anyone familiar with wiring in the Vancouver/PDX area... can you come out to my place in Battle Ground and take a look?
I hate wiring. I've ALWAYS hated wiring. But this appears to have been a minor fire, mostly related to my amp, and I don't think most of it involved the engine... nor did it go up under the dash. Think in terms of starter area and above, passenger side wheel well, some smoldered carpet, no external damage.
Need a decision on repair of the car, or strip it (Front end, rear end, exhaust, drive train, wheels/tires) and start over on another dead Z.

| You got some pics? Gotta beleive that you can fix it. Did you run a fuse in the power wire to your amp? |

The fuse or circuit breaker for the amp should have been placed right next to the battery. Thus if the power wire comes in contact with metal along route to the amplifier, the fuse blows. If not, that wire will heat up until it melts and bursts otherthings into flames. |

OK... had a chance to put it up on the lift today.
The following appears to be fried
12 volt, battery to solenoid.
3 fusible link wires to solenoid.
Ignition wire to solenoid. The solenoid itself should be replaced.
Wire to temp sensor driver's side.
2 spark plug wires/boots over starter.
Wires to electric antenna in wheel well.
Plastic inner fender towards passenger door.
wires melted inside were all related to the amp. they were all only melted in the vicinity of the passenger footwell. none were cooked in their entirety. None were cooked immediately under the dash.
I saw the passenger footwell carpet catch fire right in the middle of the footwell, after burning started in the engine compartment... burned about a square foot, and believe the amp wires melted and shorted as a result.
It APPEARS the 12 volt main arced out against the dipstick tube.
No wiring under the dash was damaged.
Today, I'm planning on replacing the wires with the links, replacing the temp sensor on the passenger side, replacing the cap, rotor and SP wires and plugs. Also, I'll put a new 12 volt main in there.
For now, I'm keeping the amp and related disconnected. Job one is getting this thing smogged by COB April... I'll worry about the sounds later. _________________ "Are you guys ready? Let's roll."
