Alright, I am gonna be in Portland for Dyno day, and the little OR 5cents on all my pop cans always intrigued me.

Add to the fact I live in a dorm, and ALL the cans and plastic bottles for the hall are in a dumpster two feet from my door.

I am thinking of loading my rig up and turning them in when I get to Oregon. The question is... Where?

Do I just take it to a transfer station... Or what is the deal. Maybe some of you Oregoonies can enligthen the Warshingtonian. Very Happy

Most grocery stores have a place to turn them in. So long as the bar-code scans to something that should be depositable, you get you $0.05

A few companies have made state-specific barcodes for their products (so that you can't get 5 cents back on a washington can that you didn't pay deposit for). About 90 percent should work fine for you though. Every retailer in Oregon that sells products with a deposit is required to take them back as well (at least the ones they sell). Most big stores have machines outside to handle the returns.

Guy I worked with at my old store saved all the WA can and turned them in at jantzen beach with no problem. We got lots of ORE people coming up to buy the soda w/o deposit so they could turn it in for deposit too.

Yeah, the big S doesn't label it's products by state, in fact I think it's mainly PepsiCo products, and a couple independent operators who do it.

Yes, that's not really a requirement, but it's alot cheaper to make a standard can that is legal to sell in any state (they are required to show their value in states that have a deposit program).

If you buy a Pepsi can in a state where you pay no such deposit it will still have that on the top of the can, but the barcode on the side is different (denoting it as a non-refundable can). You could still take it to a recycler in CA probably, because they go by weight, not even scanning the barcodes.

I guess I should have said that Safeway doesn't barcode by state (they do barcode by division though, so a 12-pack of Safeway Cola up here would be UPC 21130-24661, and with a Vons name on the box it's now a 21132-24600, and other numbers for Randall's, Carr's, Pavillions, Tom Thumb, Genuardi's, Dominick's, etc). All of these cans should have the same imprinting on the top.

It's Kelly, lol. I didn't realize you were such a variety player. I did just about everything at my old store (except Meat dept. and RICC). Good way to get hours and experience. At my new store I've only been Front End Mgr. and PIC. I am trying to get the Head Clerk spot now but it seems like half the store has applied (including people that have more experience than me like ex-head clerks and ex-asst. managers). Ugh. On the bright side, nobody from outside this store has applied for it. I think it's because anyone smart enough to be Head Clerk knows to avoid this store. Laughing
