So it really only stalls the advertised rpm from a dead stop at WOT? |

That's pretty much how it works. In fact you'll only get the advertised stall number for the specific amount of torque the converter is rated for. If you have more torque that converter will actually stall higher. That's how you can go to the junkyard and pick up a v/6 converter and have yourself a cheap mild stall converter.
But a good converter won't feel loose/sloppy just driving around.
Just came in from removing the timing cover again. Guess what? It quit leaking LOL But I guess it will be done right this time. I was also comparing the old seal to the new one and looks like last time I built this motor I used the wrong seal as well. I even took a timing cover off an LO3 to compare and mine is the same. So definitely should have been using the thick seal. Might be real fun to get in there though. |

Are you considering this for your truck? Vehicle weight plays a big role in stall behavior. There's a definite science to it, it's not just a hard and fast number on the tin. |

Definitely. That's why any reputable converter maker wants to know EVERYTHING about your build, weight, power, torque, cam, engine, transmission, gear ratio, name of your first born, how many times you pee at night. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Actually looking for a good stall for the thirdgen, going LS, I have an aluminum 5.3 and 4L65E, I know I'll probably get crap for going auto, but I have my reasons.
1. T56s are expensive
2. Don't want to mess with making the T5 work
3. I dont hate automatics, especially when 90% of my driving is in town |

At minimum I'll run a LS6 cam, but maybe something bigger.
Any suggestions? |

Auto makes sense for a highway cruiser or a stoplight racer so if that's what you're after it makes perfect sense.
...Plus the 65 is much less of a pile than the 700.
A T-56 is annoying to drive with as well as costing you your left nut. |

Lol sorry. Hijacking your thread for nothing!
So I already have a converter, but the stall speed is a mystery. I got it from a local guy who seems pretty honest, and he said it flashed 2800rpm in his 66 Chevy pickup with a stock 5.3, he took out because he blew the 60e and went to a 4L80E.
I took the converter to a place in Portland that rebuilds them, he cut it open and he told me he thinks it's stock. So I don't know who to believe. He didn't seem to do much with performance oriented stuff.

I want to cruise it everywhere really. And never complain about being stuck in traffic.
Also excited that it's computer controlled so I can dial it in to my liking. |

Got the motor back together. Lifted the car and pulled the trans out to replace the converter. I'll give a recommendation for harbor freights cheap trans jack. Its just a screw/scissor jack without tilt adjustments but works really slick so far with the auto. Also got it 25% off on mothers day.
Doing a little governor change on the trans when its down. Hopefully, I'll get it to downshift.
Went to put new converter into the trans and realized that I have the opportunity to replace the TCC checkball that the ATSG book had me remove when I built the trans. So I came in the house to research whether I should put it back or not. Looks like I should, without the checkball the tcc will lock up instantly. This may be why I noticed the stall converter so much when the tcc locks. Dana at probuilt also mentioned that its hard on the damper springs.
Sooo... looks like I wait til Tuesday for a new capsule to arrive before I can start putting everything back. |

That HF trans jack is fantastic. I used mine for about nine years and I wasn't exactly nice to it. I forget who ended up with it, Paul maybe? |

Quality may have gone downhill, I have one from a year or two ago and it blew out the screw retaining mechanism the second time I used it. I managed to booger it back together to finish the job, but it doesn't work very well anymore. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Not I.

Hmm... must have gone to Jeremiah or something.
Harbor Freight does get it right sometimes. I'm still running their aluminum floor jack after six-ish years without a single issue. I also think they have the best price:quality ratio for nitrile gloves. |

I seriously can't win. Still has a leak. Still won't quite idle. New Trans governor messed up.the shifts, but did cure the shift down problem. But worst of all, the new converter vibrates severely between 35 & 4500 rpm. It's fine cruising and suddenly smooths out over 4500 rpm. Something definitely wrong with it. |

Summits sending a new converter.. However, they say "within the next 2 days have the old converter ready for pickup" So.... guess I go out and try to pull the transmission tonight. |

That was quick. Sucks when something like that happens. Don't ask me about the time I pulled the engine on a Subaru three times in two days to try to fix a leaking input shaft seal... _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56
