This inspired me to work on my trailer, too. It's getting rusty and I better take care of that or it will be bad soon. It had little bits of rust here and there a couple years ago but I think that winter trip to Louisiana to get the 6.0L Camaro "did it in" by exposing it to winter road salts.
So I got out the flapper wheels today and started sanding off most the paint and any rust I could see. Spent a while at it and only did the front end. This kind of work sucks. Painted those surfaces up again but there is a lot left to do. Man, I wish I had indoor storage. Maybe I should just sell it while it is still decent and buy a different trailer later if I ever need one again. It just sits next to my house all the time. |

... although, now that I think about it that trailer has tracked perfectly and never gotten upset with 4000 miles on the freeway, and that includes an emergency brake slam and lane change in St. Louis. Maybe since it hasn't threatened to kill me yet I should just leave good enough alone and remove the rust.
I've also noticed the brakes are much more powerful now when behind my F150 with the factory brake controller. I think the old F250 had too much voltage drop in the wiring and the brakes didn't work very well. |

My two cents? Get a wire wheel on your grinder and buzz it all down real fast. Brush on POR15 then roll or brush on a topcoat and go with it.
The problem I have is that I can't own a trailer or everything would follow me home. I drag home enough crap on rental trailers as it is! |

Actually the wire wheel is a good idea. The flapper wheel was leaving obvious grooves anyway. I'll be making a trip to the store tomorrow. Thanks! |

Doesnt have one of these.
Worked on it this weekend. Using a 3rd truck that had a seperate fuse for the trailer lights(I'm wondering if the new dodge is this way and he popped a fuse on his).
Started un-soldering light by light and turning lights on popping fuses. Ended up being the tripple light bar across the back. Have left it dis-connected and reconneced everything else with blade style connectors incase I have to do this again.
Will go pick up a new bar light and install later. That light is the least worry-some of any on the trailer. |

| Those connectors will corrode fast. If you want to leave connectors on your harness then I'd suggest using sealed multi-pin connectors for quick connection and service points. Weatherpack, Deutsch, Ampseal are common types that come in wire sizes you need, and you can easily find the pins and crimp tools. |

These said they were weather proof. Also, as often as the side lights are getting broken, they wont have time to. Idiots keep dropping shizzle on them. |

| No such thing as weatherproof blades, but no salt in Arkansas so not as big of a deal as Illinois. |

So went and picked up my friends mustang last night with my truck. The trailer brakes werent working. Friend who uses the truck said he told me it wasnt working a few weeks ago when he was pulling his cargo trailer. Dont remember that. But fun fun fun trying to stop on hills with just truck brakes.
So since the old controller was pulled due to same issue. I'm now guessing its something in the wiring of the truck. This should be fun. |
