my GTA used to be an auto, even in stop/go traffic i prefer the stiff ass clutch and "power tower" Pro 5.0 shifter to the slushbox

Hmm Cost? T5 is definitely cheaper.....

I don't know the going rate but here is what I did for T56:

LS1 T56 - $1100
McLeod Adapter Plate - $250
McLeod Pilot - $50

Everything else is thirdgen specific. Get a torque arm/crossmember from Spohn.

Get your driveline shortened or lengthened depending on which setup you have now.

Bellhousing, clutch, pedals, hydraulics, fork, flywheel, etc are all thirdgen specifc.

If you go LT1 style you need a more expensive clutch, more expensive flywheel specific to a 2 piece rear main engine but an LT1 trans.

Speedometer is an issue. T56 is only VSS. See if Alloy is still doing a conversion to run a speedo cable.

Otherwise TKO is $2200 and you need all the same thirdgen specific stuff to bolt it in, and a custom crossmember/torque arm relocation like the spohn one. But the TKO will run a speedometer cable.

I can't imagine what a gutless POS my 2.8L would be without the T5. Go for the manual tranny. Wink

I will say IMO it blows ass to be shifting gears all the time, and having to sit on the clutch and brake at a stoplight.

Who keeps their foot on the clutch? Ever heard of neutral? Laughing

I'm with stupid

Not good for the hydros or the TOB to be sitting compressed like that all the time either.

Also, between a first-gen SBC build or a T5 swap I would like to cast my vote for none of the above. Get a damn LSx/LQx or do something completely crazy (ahem Cool).

Ideally you'd find an LS1/T56 combo. Solve both your dreams.

Texas seems to be the land of milk and honey for used, built LS engines for sale.

my little sister had an 89 firebird, 2.8L/Auto combo. was the slowest car i have ever driven. it could do a standing "powerbrake" with the one tire though. Laughing
