i think you should be measuring timing in degrees not rpm _________________

My two cents just landed on the needle valves. No filter plus running to the bottom of an old tank = no bueno.

It was good for a laugh though. |

I'm pretty sure it's at 8' right now. after TDC
There is a fuel filter on the frame rail. Just checked. I'm sure it needs to be replaced though. |

There shouldn't be an 8* mark after TDC. If it truly is after, you went the wrong way. If it's before, that's still too low, but it should run alright.

Was the intank pump removed and the proper pickup installed when you swapped the TBI for carb? |

| No. In-tank pump is still there. It was pullin gas through it. Didn't see a need to take it out. |

If you had tbi, and the pump is still in the tank and hooked up and pumping, it puts out about 9-13psi.
A carb only needs like 3-4psi(I'm not a carb guy so that may be wrong #).
So you need to install a pressure reducer, otherwise your spraying to much fuel into the carb, then into the engine...... which makes it run rich. |

| Some day when you sell that car you need to leave a piece of paper in the glove box with "www.cascadecrew.org" written on it. It's the merciful thing to do. |

Time out:
Is there a mechanical pump on the engine that you are using?
Is the intank pump still wired up and wired to run? _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Just because you don't have a computer, doesn't mean you weren't using the intank pump. I had to clarify. Cause if the intank pump was also running in addition to a mechanical pump, you'll be getting way too much fuel and causing the problem you describe.
You're trying to suck a volume of fuel through a pump. The pump was made to turn, which is what gets you the volume from the intank pump. By sucking through the veins of the pump, there is no way you can get proper volume from your mechanical pump.
It will cause a lean condition under heavier load situations. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Oh. Well in that case, i don't think its running. I don't hear it when I turn on the car.
hmph. So I do have to take it out then? |

| my car wouldn't pull fuel through the disabled in tank pump. just use the smaller return line instead. |

| I can run fuel through the return line? hmmm. Then do what with the other line? plug it? Do you mean the vapor return? |

| sure, it's the redneck hack way. 1/4 inch return line will supply enough fuel for 300 rwhp, with a carb. |

No he doesn't. But that would be a nice trick. Getting fuel out of the one line that doesn't go to the bottom of the tank.
Rodney is right that 1/4" line will work. Hell, Ford ran 1/4" from the factory for all the 390 cars (428 cars got 3/8").
If you feel like doing it right, there's a carb pickup sitting in my shed right now not doing anything. |

I thought I tried that and it wasn't pulling fuel through.
Another question. When I hit the gas it always has a flat spot. Is this related to the fuel pump? Or timing? Or something else? |

Sure. Absolutely. All of the above.
If you want your car to run correctly you have to build it correctly and tune it correctly. And that takes work on your part to learn it all and do it all right, or money on your part to pay for the work to be done right. |

| I'm pretty sure I have the timing set good. So then all it could be is the fuel pump. Would putting a fuel pressure regulator bypass having to take out the electric fuel pump? |
