Only going forward, slower speeds it's audible, otherwise I can feel it in the brake pedal. About halfway through the travel of a moderate braking event, there's a "pop" in the front end and the pedal jerks briefly. Semi intermittant as far as day to day life, but once it's doing it, it does it the whole drive.

I removed the front calipers and re-lubed the slides. It seemed to go away for about a week and now it's back. I assume it makes the noise when moving because of the rotational play allowing the caliper to move or rotate a bit, then the brake pressure has to overcome the friction to get it to slide. Am on off base here? Or does this make sense?

Had it in the air and got no play out of the susp components and the strut cap has some play, but seems firm enough in the rubber that its not hitting anything.

When you have wheel off will it only slide back and forth or will it tilt just a bit towards rotor

It won't slide unless it has the rotor to push against. The pistons will just push the pad. Newtons 3rd law takes care of the rest. to cause the caliper to move on the slides.

I would suspect that something is binding on the slides. Maybe polish them and re-lube????

It will slide with the piston pushed in.

I think I see what you mean now.

Is there excessive play between the caliper body, and the pin? That is a good point, if there is play there, the rotational force could cause to pop, but normally this only happens once when you set off, from then the force always acts on the caliper towards the forward pin.

Just out of curiosity....is the pedal bushing in good shape? maybe the poping has nothing to do with the calipers/brakes at all, and it is just the pedal bushing, or the connection of the master to the pedal.

That's a good point. Also if you want to ponder about make brake problem in the thread before this one, I would appreciate it

Outside audible pop when it happens, just feel on the inside. Pedal is in good shape.

There's a little bit of play on the pins so you can actually rock the caliper around the rotor (in/out) in reference to the car itself.

I'd throw a new set of caliper pins at it, Paul.

Had an old Suburban I was working on. One of the caliper pins was snapped clean off. Caused a single loud pop, and then hard pull under braking.

Here's the catch. One pin is built into the caliper carrier. The other is the removable bolt that keeps the caliper in there.

Excessive play between the caliper piston / caliper will do the same thing. The pads should show this though.

Ive had funky noises come when the wheel bearing was bad and when you pressed on the brakes it would tilt the rotor into a different angle. Confused

Wheel bearings are relatively new and have no play.

You ever get problem sorted out? That was simular prob I had with my truck, so I put a new caliper on thinking it was the problem. It wasn't, so I now am thinking it is part of steerin componants
