I bought an AC delete box from a guy on thirdgen.org. It's made of fiberglass, is shiny black, and the holes don't quite line up to my firewall. Trying to figure out if this was a legit GM part or not.

Thanks. That led me to do a little Google search and I think I bought one of these.

Even though I didn't get what was advertised I still got a good deal. I guess it's fine.

Stamped steel is correct.

I like that fiberglass one. Way better looking then the one I molded of the gm steel one. Wonder if it would fit the ac blower motor system?

WTF? Dude, you could have bought THREE steel ones for the price of one of theirs. And the GM ones wont crack. Rolling Eyes

I thought I was buying an original GM part. I paid $125 shipped which includes the cover, fan, and switch resistors. I don't think I need the resistors but it is built into the unit.

Do you think I should complain or just consider this good enough? That's what I'm trying to figure out. At best I was thinking of giving the guy a neutral trader rating for not disclosing all the facts.

I have never seen anything like that box in any thirdgen. I've pulled bought and sold many delete boxes and all of them were steel, and all of them were the same shape.

That guy's boxes look like they're made to hold the taller squirrel cage (which came only in aircon cars). They're also much taller on the top end for some reason (hole in the firewall is the same size, so it doesn't make a lot of sense).

This is a stock GM steel unit in my car:

The one in the link looks like a 2nd gen box in my opinion.

So what is a fair price for a factory box with fan?

Paid $12 for mine at the junkyard, with all wiring, the relay, resistor and fan with motor.

But I see them for $40-$60 complete on TGO and other places mostly.

You got PM dude, but those guys are right on about pricing. I hope that eBay dude will take a return.

BTW, you don't actually need the fan or the resistor or any of the harness. You can reuse your old aircon fan (heavier unit with one extra speed) if you get the proper squirrel cage for it.

On my last two cars I have gotten the cages out of mid-size FWD GM cars, it bolts up perfectly to the larger fan shaft, but fits in the smaller box. Wink

I thought the resistor provided the speeds? I'm using the three-speed fan with my four-speed resistor and it seems to work fine???? It's just a regular old 12V motor.

I think I have resistors on the box inside the cab, so it's already wired into my car. All I should have to do is plug in the connector at the fan and I have as many speeds as I do switch positions on my dash control, right?

The resistor (resistor network) does provide speeds.

The fan has only a two wire input, so is only capable of one speed, depending on the voltage supplied. The resistor network is a voltage divider and provides everything but high speed voltage to the fan, depending on switch position.

So what's the hose coming off the fan in the engine bay? It's too big to be a drain for condensation. Is it supposed to wrap around to the box to provide a clean air source for cooling of the fan motor?

Yeah, I stated that kinda wrong. Using the 4-speed resistor with the smaller motor will work, but who wants a smaller motor? Razz

The hose coming off of the motor into the box is some sort of bypass, probably for cooling. I have run it open and with a tube there, didn't seem to matter much.

I'll bet it's an air cooled motor and needs a clean air source. Maybe cap it off with a filter.

Al: Thanks, that's what I was trying to say except you stated it much more concisely. Smile
