I need a fan for my motherboard.... not the cpu fan, but a small 1.7"x1.7" fan that does some kind of video cooling.
It lost a fin and spins really erratically, and is causing my system to overheat when I play something with graphics.
Not sure where to start since it's so specific. Thought I might get a response or two from some of our tech peoples! |

Might be other places that you can get them (check Radio Shack?) but Fry's is almost a guaranteed bet on parts like that.

well Paul this is more up my alley
typically if your system overheats when playing with graphics its due to video cards getting hot, but after looking at your mb pic, that fan is not on your video card, however that fan may be placed where graphic data gets processed on the mb. Id replace that asap, check Fry's or such to see if you can fanagle something, if that fails warranty the mb maybe. |

The fan does do something with the 8Xagp cooling. I have an MSI 64mb Gforce4 video card... has it's own narly fan onboard. Bought everything like two years agao so nothing will be warrentied.
Will call some local shops, then hit frys! |

There is a shop on 122nd and airport way. They usualy have pretty good deals on stuff like them.
EMU is always a good place, its out in beaverton though, but probably still as closer than frys. |

I'm probably heading down to Fry's in the next day or two Paully. If you are going to go there let me know and I'll cut the drive in half for you.
I need a cpu fan for the puter downstairs and shop boosters for the wireless network.

Mike, what does a booster do for a wireless network?
I have a lan with my computer and wifes and she shares my net connection through the lan, but just got an IBM laptop and don't want to run wires with it. Am thinking of getting a wireless lan card for it, but will the signal penetrate the metal walls of my shop and allow me to be able to use the laptop in the house? You have seen my place, so thought you might be the right person to ask about this. |

Dan,
I'm just learning myself and thought that the signal would have been stronger. I do have a few concrete walls between me and the computer downstairs. My understanding is that it just boosts the signal strength providing increased distance and/or strength.
Most home wireless setups are running on 2.4GHz (like cordless phones). That may be one indicator for you if you have cordless phones and have strong signal. I will let you know what I find out. I can say that the computer downstairs is working just fine but the signal strength is low.
My wife wants to get a laptop soon also so I figured I would go ahead and setup the wireless now since I also got the kids XBOX live and will use a wireless game adapter to connect that to the internet through my broadband connection.
Maybe Dewey with his understanding of the different network layers will pipe in .

edit: oh btw, assuming that you don't need a booster, you should only need 1 wireless router and 1 adapter card for the laptop. Your existing computer can connect to the router with a cable saving you the expense of another wireless adapter. Should be pretty straightforward to set that up. |

Well I don't think it will be tough to set up, just wonder if the signal will penetrate the shop wall and reach the laptop in the house. Guess I'll have to try and see. A wireless pmcia card is only $39, so not much of a cash outlay to see if it works I guess.
I'm on satellite feed now for my connection, but it's a pain. Goes offline often for no reason I can see. So I'm switching to dsl. It's probably not as fast on the download speed, but should be more reliable, and $30 cheaper per month for us. |

John, there is an ENU on 122nd just off Airport Way. That's where I got my soundcard, HD, and case!
Mike, lets go to Frys! That would work out real sweet!

Got a fan from fry's, and they even knew what they were talking about! The original fan is two pin, the new fan is 3. He said repin it with the old 2pin connector, and leave the the yellow wire out, its just for variable fan speed. With just the two, it should spin max rpm.
It does, and so far so good! Sweet. Thanks guys! |

I wouldnt hold my breath about it working that way |

| Well I decided to try and put it in the house and see how that worked, but during the installation I got an error. I called and they said my 2 computers are bridged, and I have to remove that for the DSL to work. They can't explain what bridged means. to me. I have my main computer in my shop with the satellite modem on it, and wife's computer on a lan sharing my connection. I am going to try and put the DSL modem on her computer and share her connection. But, have no clue how to make it work now since they are "bridged". |
