| I turned 17 today, but its in no way a happy birthday. My car is stuck sitting. Again. I have been desperately searching for a new transmission, but to no avail. People just don't want to let go of their manual transmissions. So there it remains. All alone in the shop. Waiting for someone to take pity and let loose of their trans. So I'm asking you guys - what can I do? Both to cheer myself up AND get my poor car back on the road. This sucks lol |

Yeah thanks for your efforts but theres 2 problems lol. 1) I don't think a v6 tranny could hold up to a 383 and 2)I'm not in that area any more I'm down in stupid Texas. If only there were people like that guy down here. Then I'd be set. |

Aww nuts lol I'll update it then.
He's damn close cus I live in La Vernia but that trans won't work. I have a 2 piece rear main seal and a mech speedo. If I'm not mistaken the 86's had a 1 piece rear main and electronic speedo. But I'm not 100% sure on that. |

What happened to the T5?
You could go through it and you can get parts very easily...
I can get all new parts :O) _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

| if he has a 383 a t-5 is not going to last long...my very mild 350 chewed up 3rd gear and broke the c-clip holding 5th gear on the shaft...your best option is to either pick up a t56...or go the route i did...and get a tremec tko600 its a good trans will hold up to the power...although if i had to choose again and i had the money i would of got a built tremec t56 but it was to much and i had to get car fixed for a 1500mile drive so i had no option...another option is you can pick up a automatic trans for awhile till you find a manual that will work for you...this is the problem about ppl building motors up on our cars...you really need to make sure the drive train can handle the power... |

Any transmission will grenade with enough power in front of it. Ive seen plenty of the fabled T56 and tko600 get chewed to pieces in front of engines that they should have held that and more. Depends on the driver also.
U have a t-5 that needs gone thru? Just go thru that and toss it in there until you get something else that will be a little bit better.
If you have enough power chewing transmissions is just a fact of life.
I have been seeing transmission as like tires haha they run, get burned out, and get rebuilt only to do it all over again the next season _________________

^ The truth ^
I broke my T56 in front of my 240 horse L98. When I sold that thing it had no reverse, and first and third were on their way out.
That said, considering Monday was his 17th birthday, I don't think any transmission will have too much of a life in his car. |

Explains why Ian has blown up his T56 so many times behind a 305! Hey, come to think of it I own that engine now! _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

T56s have a few known week points. Once those are taken care of they are stout.
Hense my 330RWHP motor launching 4k RPM breaking 10 bolt axles, and twisting 31 spline 9" axles, and twisting drivelines... and the trans still drives like a dream.
Typically unlss you're doing alot of clutch drops, the 10 bolt rear is weaker than a fresh T5. Our cars don't really hook up well enough without rubber to warrent a swap from a 10 bolt and T5 to something else... with under 300hp. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

| No I don't have a t5 yet. I have a 700r4. I need a manual trans of some sort because I don't like autos so building up my 700 would be a waste of money. If I had a manual then I would definitely rebuild it. What are some of those weak spots? |

weak points on the t5 definitely the casing...and also the forks...and 3rd gear
i know a trans can break...just saying a properly built one has a better chance of surviving then just throwing a junkyard trans into a car that has far more power then its capable of handling...and your right it does depend on the driver...my tko 600 been treating me fine...i wasnt talking about a stock t56 though...i was referring to a built one...another reason some ppl go threw so many trans...is because they do not properly break them in... |

3-4 Shift fork replace the aluminum one with Steel.
1-2 and 3-4 syncho keys (dogs) replace with billet
1-2 and 3-4 Nylon plastic shift pads replace with Bronze
Set end play to .000 rather than the specified .002
That's all I did to mine. I replaced the 2-6 synchros when I was in mine also since they were worn.
The next step is to step up to the 32 spline Viper Mainshaft... which is spendy cause you need the shaft, and the tail, and I don't know if it fits in our cars cause it moves the shifter forward a bit. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

| Yeah I checked all the yards a while ago. Got nothin. But today i went to the speed shop i bought my stroker kit from and they gave me a number of a guy who might have one. He didn't have it, but he said to call his cousin cus he might. So i called him and he has a freshly rebuilt one for 650 bucks. Out of an 86 camaro. So tomorrow hopefully I can go check it out. But it has no shifter or bellhousing. But at least I've made some progress. Yay. |
