Hey i got a quick question bout your 4th gen.. its a 6 speed right?

if you have it in neutral and are outside of the car... can you hear your tranny making a knock sound? im curious if its a normal 6speed noise or not? thanks man

It shouldn't make any noise. If it's only in neutral or with the clutch in, sounds like the input shaft bearings are going out... if T56 have those!

Nice and quiet with the clutch in... only makes the nasty noise when the clutch all the way up... its weird.. cause ive brought it in 7 times now.. and it still makes the exact same noise i keep having them try to fix, and they have not fixed it once...

the only time they made the noise go away is when they put some thick fluid in it then it went away... although the gears then did grind so thats not exactly fixing anything hehe

If it doesn't do it with the clutch disenganged. then it is something making noise inside the tranny, and something that is spinning even in neutral (like the input shaft), I'm not exactly a tranny expert by any means. But a tranny should not do that. Wink

Throwout bearing.


A throwout bearing can make noise clutch out, not clutch in. When the clutch is pressed in, any slack is taken up by the pressure plate clutch fork pressure.

That's my guess now!

nice nice thanks for the replys.. this tranny company is a joke. this time they had it... they replaced my god damn harmonic balancer to try to fix my tranny noise? they are stupid...

id think itd have to be some kind of bearing since think fluid drowns out the sound.

Mine doesn't knock, but I can hear a faint rattle probably coming from the throwout bearing like Paul mentioned. Of course, I'm pretty sure that my clutch (and related hardware) is all the as installed from the factory in 95...

Sounds like an input bearing. Should make noise with the tranny in neutral clutch all the way up. Go away when you push the clutch in. If its loud enough to hear it while driving, it will be quieter in 4th gear. Bad input bearings are real common on modern manual trannys. Also the thicker fluid will quiet a bad bearing. Do you know what fluid theyre using? and what gm recommends? Gm has changed the type of fluid required a couple of times. Alot of rebuild places will use auto trans fluid.. which is really thin. Then they might have tried 75-90 gear lube which will make it hard to shift. Some people use 10w-30 motor oil.

I think the recommended fluid now is GM Synchromesh. I beleive even it has been reformulated a couple of times. The trans shop probably doesnt want to use it, cause it costs alot more.

If it has auto trans fluid in it now, i'd try the syncromesh and see what happens.

Mine must have been really bad in the old jimmy because I could hear the input bearings with the clutch pressed in!

Umm.. how can you hear the input bearing with the clutch pushed in paul?? Nothings turning but the throwout and pilot when the clutch is pushed in!

ok the fluid thing is great... this will take away the noise.. but is it going to be a problem down the road? i mean i just had this thing rebuilt... well supposedly and its been in the shop 7 times now and i get it back everytime with the same noise... they cant seem to get it right..

i just want to make sure this noise isnt supposed to be there before i start defending myself in court. thanks for the input guys

I don't quite remember all the details about the T-56, but I do remember on my T-5 that it was crucial to ensure that the input shaft bearing had a certain preload/clearance within a very specific range, no more, no less. Otherwise the bearing would start with a crunching/grinding sound and get worse until it either ate itself, or cause everything else down the line to start getting eaten.

I have a pdf file of the T-56 manual if you need it to troubleshoot. Send me a pm if you want it.

(for everybody's info, I also have a pdf of the T-5 too...)
