As you all know, I'm a Jarhead, always will be until the day I get sent to a new theater of operations by someone with a much higher pay grade then me.

I ran across this and it made me think of all the servicemen laying in foxholes protecting our way of life this holiday season. I hope this means as much to you as it does me.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
'SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY! COUNTRY, MY CORPS.'

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.'

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,!
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.'

Thanks,
I can't type much more through the tears in my eye.
I couldn't agree more. Thumbs up

I do believe you posted this last year Dan. It's just as good this time as the last. I have come across other versions of the same for the other branches also, and me being a submarine sailor, I'll put that one up..

Quote:
'Twas the night before Christmas; he lived in a crowd,
In a 40 man berthing, with shipmates so loud.

I had come down the sail with some presents to give,
And to find out just who in this small rack did live.

I looked all about, a strange sight did I see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stockings hung, just a poopy-suit at hand;
On the bulkhead were pictures of a far-distant land.

He had medals and badges, awards of all kinds,
But one of particular interest I did find:
Dolphins with a submarine, pinned on with pride.
While glancing around, it was clear to see, I'd
Find this place quite different: dark, silent, and dreary,
'Twas the bunk of a Submariner at once I saw clearly.

The Sailor lay sleeping in this gray, crowded room,
Curled up in his rack, only dreaming of home.
His face looked so gentle, his berth couldn't be cleaner,
But this was not how I'd pictured a U.S. Submariner.

Could this be the hero I'd seen on TV
Defending his country so that all could be free?
I realized the families that I'd seen this night,
Owed their lives to these Sailors who were willing to fight.

Soon 'round the world, the children would play,
And grown-ups would celebrate a new Christmas Day.
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year
Because of the Sailor, like the one lying here.

I couldn't help but wonder how many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve on the sea, far from home.
The very thought brought a small tear to my eye;
I dropped to my knees, and I started to cry.

The Sailor awakened, and I heard his tired voice,
"Friend, don't cry; for this life is my choice.
I'll bravely defend the seas day by day,
Though few ever know of the price we must pay."

The Sailor rolled over and fell back asleep,
I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours--so silent, so still,
And both of us shivered from the long night's cold chill.

I didn't want to leave on that cold winter's night,
This Guardian of Honor, who defended what's right.
Then he rolled over once more, and with voice calm and pure,
Whispered, "Carry on, Friend; never fear! All's secure!"

I don't know if I posted if before or not, but each christmas it should be posted to remind everyone why they have the freedoms we do here.

Please post your version for any service you have them for. It's not just the Marines that keep this land free. Every branch has paid their dues and deserves recognition for their and their family's sacrifices to keep this the land of the free because of the brave.

Thank you for your service to our country Al.

Let's not forget the men and women in blue. Especially the families of the fallen officers of the Lakewood Police Department.

Quote:
‘Twas the night before Christmas,
Yet he slept all alone.
In a one-bedroom house,
Made of plaster and stone.

I had come down the chimney
With presents to give,
And to see just what man
In this small house did live.

I looked all about,
What a strange site to see.
No tinsel, no presents,
Not even a tree.

No stockings by the fire,
Just boots spit shined bright.
Then something else gleamed,
Reflecting the moonlight.

They were medals and badges,
Awards of all kinds.
And a sobering thought
Soon came to my mind.

For this house was different,
Unlike any I’d topped.
This was the home of an officer,
The home of a cop.

I’d heard stories about “them”,
And I had to see more.
So I walked down the hall,
And pushed open the door.

And there he lay sleeping,
Silent and alone.
Curled up on his bed,
In this one-bedroom home.

He seemed so gentle,
His face weathered tan,
I soon understood
That this was more than a man.

For I realized the families
That I saw this night,
Owed their lives to these people
Who were willing to fight.

Soon round the nation
The children would play,
And grown-ups would celebrate
On a bright Christmas day.

They all enjoyed safety
Each month, and all year
Because of officers like him,
This man lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder
How many were on patrol.
All alone on Christmas Eve
Out in the shivering cold.

I watched him for hours,
So silent and so still,
And I noticed that he shivered,
From the cold nights chill.

So I took off my jacket,
The one made of red.
And I covered this officer
From his toes to his head.

Then I put on His jacket
With the badge of silver and gold,
With the words “Police Officer”
Emblazoned so bold.

Though it barely fit me
I began to swell with pride,
And for one shining moment
I was an officer inside.

I didn’t want to leave him
So quiet in the night,
This guardian of justice,
So willing to fight.

But half asleep he rolled over,
And in a voice clean and pure
Said, “Carry on Santa - it’s Christmas,
All here is secure.”

One look at my watch
And I knew he was right.
Merry Christmas my friend,
Code four and good night.

That reminds me of my brother-in-law, a Major in the Army, currently serving in Iraq. He is away from my sister and their family this holiday season for the first time since they have been married. Sad
