Sounds like the trans isn't locking up, would make a 200'ish rpm difference if it isn't. When I had another transmission put in my car, the lockup wasn't working. Easy test is to hit the highway, at light throttle, and tap the brake pedal just enough to light up the taillights. You should see the rpms jump up a couple hundred rpm.

My understanding with the 700r4, is that you aren't getting the cooling capacity if you aren't locking up, something like only 60% of your fluid gets through your cooling system if you aren't, and when it locks up, it will allow fluid to get from your torque converter through your cooling system. Could be hearsay, just what I got from the trans shop. Assuming it is a lockup converter, that is.

From the LT1 swap thread:

chevymad wrote:
Without lockup 60% of the oil bypasses the trans cooler. Some screwed up thing gm did on their OD transmissions. Only when the convertor is locked does all the oil go through the cooler. So not only are you creating more heat because the convertor is unlocked, you have less of a chance to get rid of it.

Your tranny shop is correct.

ok so i tested this today, and the rpm's did go up when i pressed the brake, does the mean my lock up is or isnt working?

No, that's a good thing. You should also be able to feel it unlock when you give it part throttle when cruising in OD.

Basically you swapped out your stock 25" RS tires for 17" chrome IROC's, correct? Depending on your exact aspect ratio, you gained around one inch diameter. That will lower the RPM at cruise.

Your 215's are 25x8.5, your 245's are 26x9.6. That's your difference. Get down and Boogie!

Now that you got that settled, start thinking about something to make it faster. I, for instance, have been thinking a lot lately about how GM 3800II engines use the same 60* Metric bellhousing as the 2.8/3.1 engines... Squint

I think I'm missing something here. Changing tire size will make the speedometer incorrect as well. Speed and RPM will have the same relationship regardless of tire size, until the speedometer gear is changed. Same was true when I removed the 3.08 rear end I had and swapped in a 3.23.

Somewhere around here is a pic of Dewey's stock tach on the dyno as his LO3 spins to 8,000+ rpm.

His tach is prolly not 100% accurate.

But this thread gets a big LOL from me!! Laughing

Correct, but the intake points to the rear making it hard to put in a rwd application.

What you should look at more is how the northstar motor uses the same 2.8/3.1 bellhousing Wink Ive seen one in a gen4 camaro.

mine used to do that too, but i wired in the correct resistance to fix it,

i didnt know the 3800 motor had the same belhousing pattern, thats sweet, i should find one and swap em. haha northstar swap would be kinda cool.

i also have a stage 1 chip in it, idk if that will affect rpm's or anything

Unless you have a 98+ V6 F body.

aaron, I can tell you for a fact that while the bellhousing flange is a 60 degree V6 pattern, the transmisssion mounts totally different. Also, I don't think you could use a 60 degree V6's bellhousing on a Series II 3800, because the starter mounts on the opposite side of the 2.8/3.1/3.4's, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

One of the regular customers that comes in to my work has a ferrari kit car built on a fiero chassis with an L67. Sounds just like a GTP, and he fools actual ferrari owners all the time at cars shows, he claims that they instantly stop talking to him and walk away when they find out its a replica. lol

fiero l67 is quite commen.

A friend here deals in the kit replicas. He wont touch one with an aftermarket motor. I tried to talk him into one with a northstar.

Haha I'd love to see that thing!

You are correct that on the L36 and L67 engines, the starter is on the drivers side (front if thinking in terms of wrong-wheel-drive).

HOWEVER, I want you all to take a long hard look at this picture of a bellhousing from some 2.8/3.1 third-gen. Take a good long look at it.

Yeah... Twisted Evil
