what were the specs on your compressor?
I read on autobody101.com that 15 CFM would be ideal but I want to know personal experiences with it.
(hvlp guns need like 10 and your suppose to have 1.5 times that)
but the best one I could find without spending too much was 8.7 CFM at 40 psi.
I can not justify buying an super expensive compressor to fix a few dents.
I just looked at this one too, its 8.8 CFM at 40 psi, but its from harbor freight
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93271
thanks
(also what guns you used would be great!!) _________________ -Donald

One thing to consider is that the gun is rated as if you pulled the trigger and just held it. When you're actually painting, its on, sweep, off, sweep.. so it doesnt quite use the full cfm. I have what used to be considered a 5hp with a 33 gallon tank and though it runs a DA it has to run all the time. The DA is the most air consuming tool I have. A few years ago the hp ratings were down rated. . so my 5hp may be like 3.5? Not really sure. One thing I will recommend is not to buy an oil less air compressor. In general they're more noisey, and the diaphrams eventually wear out.
If you plan on doing alot of car work in the future buy the most compressor you can afford. I really need a bigger one myself, but can't complain about this craftsman. Its been 15 years and probably 6 or 7 paint jobs.. and still working. |

I dont know how many cfm my comp. pushes, but its not enough for a sand blaster.
I have used suction and hvlp. I spray at 35psi unless I'm trying to color match.
I know using gun and other power tools, the comp seems to cycle about the same rate as impact, ratchet, sheers. Die grinder or da make it cycle more. |

i used a binks gun (can't remember the model) and a 135psi 50 gallon compressor (dialed down the psi of course)
be sure to use a water trap in the line to keep the moisture from ruining the paint as you spray.

possibly 2 or 3 water traps.
If the air hose ever had an inline oiler on it, get a new hose. |
