Schultzy (Mike) and I (John), took a three day trip around Oregon this week.

We had been talking about doing a trip like this for some time now, and it
finally worked out this week. Mike spent a bunch of time researching roads
and planned out a great route for us. There were several routes and roads
that neither of us had been on before. Besides, what can be better than
three days, 825 miles, motorcycles and a couple of friends. If only we knew
just what we were in for, or how great the journey and adventure would be.

The Route:

Day 1

Day one started off at Mike's house. We got the motorcycles all loaded up,
and ready to go.

We then met up with Ian and Anthony, who Mike works with. The four of us
headed towards Astoria.

We stopped at the Wet Dog Cafe / Astoria Brewing for lunch.

We checked out the trolly as it rolled by. The driver was a little weird
and very hard of hearing.

From Astoria, we headed south. We took Logan RD from Astoria to Seaside.

We said goodbye to Ian and Anthony in Cannon Beach, they headed back to
Portland, Mike and I headed further south.

We stopped at a viewpoint to check out haystack rock. There was a young
lady there, who had riden a bicycle from Kelso. We got her to take a
pictures of us and the motorcycles.

We followed 101 all the way down to Pacific City. Stopped there at
the Pelican Brewery.

Both of us were getting a little cold, and a little tired. From
Pelican, it was non-stop all the way to Newport, which was our final
stop for the night.

We ended the night at the Rogue Public House. It was a little weird,
kind of quite, and not real lively. We had dinner, a beer, and called
it a night.

Day 2

A.K.A -- The day the cagers tried to kill The Lama, several times.

We woke up on day two, suprised and just how mild of a morning it
had turned out to be. We loaded up, and got the heck out of dodge
and on our way back inland.

We rode non-stop from Newport, all the way to Albany. In Albany,
the city was kind of enough to give us a job for the day, and also
our own parking spot.

We stopped and of course had another cup of coffee. We sat there
and watched a crazy hobo dude, try to find the owner of a dog that
was wondering in the parking lot.

We headed out of Albany, and stopped again at a little lake just
outside of Sweet Home. Just after we pulled in, a guy on Harley
pulled in, and introduced himself. We chatting and BS'ed, with
Dave for about 20 minutes, before getting on the road again.

We rode along highway 20 for a while, and then got stuck waiting
in a construction zone. We sat there for a long time waiting for
the pilot car to show up. Once we got past the construction, we
pulled over to let the cars go their own way. We then had the road
to ourselfs. Not another soul for miles.

We found several fun ways to enjoy the solitude.

From higway 20, we then headed south along highway 126. We found
a cool waterfall along the way. It seemed to be a pretty busy stop
for hikers and such along that route.

From there, we hit the road we had been looking forward to, and planning
since we started thinking about this. The scenic McKenzie pass (OR-242).
This turned out to be one of the biggest highlights of the trips. The
road is amazing, and the views even more amazing.

Mike took lots of pictures along this road.

It was mile after mile of tight turns. It was motorcycling heaven.

After climbing out of the forest, it deposited us into a huge lava field.

The scene was like something from a distant moon. We climbed around, and
explored the lava fields for a while. We both about killed ourselfs
trying to climb on the jagged rocks, with big drops around us.

We pretty much had the place to ourselfs. I descided to play around in the
middle of the road. Working on may Dewey-Lama Zen.

While I was playing in the road, Mike stacked up a few rocks, and called
it his castle.

The view from the Mike's castle (aka, the observatory), was great.

We then caught up with highway 97, and road that all the way to Bend.

We spent the night in Bend, but of course we first had to make a stop
at the Descutes Brewery!!!!

Day 3

Day three is brought to you by Starbucks...

At least, Mike checking out the route, while drinking his S-Bucks.

We hit the road, and headed out into the desert.

We road along on 26 stopping to enjoy the view along the way.

Sometimes, I sat down...

Mike tried not to fall down...

We made our way into Mitchell, OR. We filled the tanks, and had lunch
at the local Cafe.

The owner of the cafe was a rider too, he suggested a couple of roads
in the area, and also gave us "local" motorcycle maps that he had in
the cafe to give to motorcyclists. He was spot on, and we started making
our way to the Painted Hills State Park.

I see now why they are called the Painted Hills. Maybe I should get a pic.

I even managed to convince Mike that the gravel would not hurt the chrome
on his bike. If it did, it would just give him more stuff to polish.
He loves polishing stuff..snicker, snicker.

After about a mile on the gravel, we got the the overlook. The view from
up there is breath-taking.

After leaving the Painted Hills, we followed the cafe owners advice
and took of on the little travel road between Mitchell and Twickenham.
This road ran through a canyon, and was a great ride.

That road took us into fossil. We then prepared ourselfs to ride the famous
OR218 between Fossil and Antelope. This road did to stand up to all the fame.

We got to Antelope, and were both running a bit short of fuel. The owner
of the general store in Antelope, told us the closest fuel was 35 miles away
in any direction. We descided to take our chances, and shoot for Maupin.

We took a back road between Shaniko and Maupin. It had some great views from
the top of the Platue. You could see both Mt Jefferson, and Mt Hood.

As great as the views were, it was really bloody windy. Mike got cold, and
descided to put on his jacket.

The last mile or two into Maupin was pretty neat. It was a series of switch
backs down into the descutes valley. I eyed the road ahead, and got ready to
set off.

As I looked down, this was the view I had in store, one turn after another.

We made it on fumes to Maupin, and filled the tanks up for the very last
time on this trip. From Maupin it would be a highway shot all the way
back into Portland. It was getting a little late, and we didn't have time
to take the scenic route back into town.

We did however manage to grab a couple of good shots as we crossed over Mt Hood.

With that, our trip was completed. I got home, took my boots off and had a beer.

Looked like an awesome ride. I'm gonna have to keep that route in mind, really looked like some cool places especially the eastern side of it.

I'm not really a cruiser guy, but that looks like fun. Half the time the greatest stories are just the people you encounter, and try to ward off, a long the way.

Ah man way damn cool guys! looks like it was just the killa ride.
Great Pics too, that is some really sweet looking country, and awesome roads.
That brings back so many great memories for me of some ventures...nice!

Thanks Lama boy... great job!

My odometer clicked exactly 825 miles as the front tire hit my driveway. As awesome as the pics are you just can't capture the experience that way.

amazing pictures looks as if you guys had one heck of a good time...next time you should cruise up to washington go threw the olympic national forest just a suggestion...wish i had a bike...i c how you payed for the trip though it was sponsored by monkey butt powder lol..

Ya I want to plan a similar Northern trip but this time of year the weather gets a bit tricky. Saw the Oregon forecast and decided to go for it. Would love to cruise the Olympics.
