It's the platform GM used Camaro & Firebird. Other letter designations were used for other platforms.

All the older cars used leter designations for the platform. Corvettes were Y-bodies; cavaliers/sunfires were J-bodies; there are G bodies, B bodies, and the list goes on.

Well the reason I was wondering at all is because last night I was watching "Police Chases" the narrator said the cop was chasing a guy in a "Formula Camaro" it was a 3rd gen. . So i wondered if thats what the "F" stood for.

GM uses alot of different codes for different cars...

F - Camaro, Firebird...
W - Grand Prix, Regal, Monte Carlo...
H - Bonneville, Lucerne, etc...

There's more but thats just an example
