so i took the red car yesterday for some drivetime in town... all was fine till after a while at running normal engine temp and oil pressure was at the in dash stock gauge, ..... now oil pressure on the guge reads way low and at times almost drops into the red at idle every time i"d stop it would just steadaly lose rpm and die then it cranks slow as hell with a brand new batt in it and at times it sounded like a rod knocking(kinda the same sound it had before it whent kapoot before) but it goes away at low idle or it just goes away, i limped it home with a little left foot breaking, changed the oil pressure stayed the same(put a little thicker oil in it) low at idle goes up and down with rpms not the normal but alot, started it checke the timing while the engine was at normal running temp it was way off from where i had it set so i retimed it now it just lopes buy over around 500 rpm intervals and if in park you stab the breaks it dies . any ideas ??? please dont tell me the oil pumps going Rolling Eyes i was thinking mabye brake booster ? i know its a major source of vaccume, oh yea it also backfires now agaon when you nail the throttle but its not the fireball through the t.b. it seems to be in the intake and alot for high pitched then when it was out of time before so im a little confused cause it was running fine

Something else goes in a SBC before the oil pump. The Brake booster is not a source for vacuum. It GETS vacuum from the manifold. Thirdgen Oil Pressure gauges are notoriously inaccurate. Sometimes I think they just took an idiot light sender and plugged it in.

High pitched what?

Did you time the engine with the EST connector unplugged?

Which motor is this... TPI or TBI? I'd be thinking about checking fuel pressure also. I'd also get my scanner on and make sure all my sensors are reading what they're supposed to.

Check the obvious, burned plug wires, firing order, etc etc. If it's not a MAF car, then a vacuum leak would cause a high idle unless it's an ungodly large leak.

What did the oil look like coming out? Did you change it into a clean pan so you could see what it looked like?

just out of curiousity, did you check the oil level before you drove?

What kind of oil are you running?

Some of the guys who've run the Delo 400, say it bleeds off pressure when the oil is up to temp @ idle.

Delo is kinda weird. I get 80psi cold idle and 25 warm. Some of that is just the FE oiling system though. Personally I would drop for an accurate (i.e. Autometer) pressure gauge.

Delo does bleed off. I don't like it. Works good for cam break in but after that from now on it's outta here.

General formula how I understand it for most V8's you want about 10-12psi for every 1000rpm until you deal with oil starvation issues to your bearings and oil return to the pan. Providing you have a good filter.

I.E. if you have a 850-900rpm idle, if you have at least 10psi @ idle, you should be okay, although generally most pushrod-oilers run around 20-40psi at hot idle.

as for your other idle problems, those I can't help much with.

k here goes, sorry on the delay i had to cool my head and had a couple dr. app, oil was full had some cheapie oil in it i was usuing till i got it running right. it come out looking ok maybe a little thin but ok. the high pitched is in the backfire it sound weird to me i've never heard one sond that way before, thats why i was thinking somthing major in the vaccume lines may have burned up once it got warm, theres no lines hooked to the dist ony the wires on the back.

whats the EST ? im using a timing light thats as old as the car to Rolling Eyes

btw i just whent out and started it it lopes bad , very bad and as soon as you put it into gear it dies, but the oil pressure gauge reads right lol, hopfully it will be nicer tomarrow so i can get a better look at it

LOL Greg, on EFI cars there is a timing connector. A one wire connect you have to unplug to put the ignition module in bypass mode(means the computer is no longer controlling the timing.) THEN you set your timing... TBI in this case is 0º.

ON our cars it's a brown wire with black stripe above the heater box in the engine bay.

If you don't unplug this, and you set your car to 0º, you'll be running some 20º retarded.

Go time it right, and she'll purr like a kitten.

Just make sure after you finish timing it, that you turn the motor off again and plug the connector in.... or plug it in and then turn the motor off. You have to shut the motor off to get the module out of bypass mode. If you just plug it in while it's running and go drive, you'll have 0º of timing period.

still backfires a bit underload any ideas ? runs like dog do under stress , its in time and not even a degree off from where my blackbird runs on time , it runs way better when the mark is way before the indacater , think its a possiblaty that the dizzy may be bad ?

Pop the cap off and check in there.

You're gonna need to start looking at sensors and ignition components. Cap/rotor/wires/plugs etc.

everything but the dizzy is new for the ignition , thats why i was thinking that was the issue or maybe the computer ? but im not shure what that all runs

Is it throwing codes? Have you put a dialback light on it and watched the curve come in? Have you gone back through all the new ignition components to make sure you didn't get something DOA?

Missing a ground? Valves adjusted wrong? Vacuum leak? Intake gasket bad?
