have a good chain, make sure the engine hoist can handle the load.
Have lots of fun, and beers standing by!

The camaro noses are stupid long. Make sure you get a lift that can reach all the way in. Coming at it from the side does not work. 1/2 ton lift will be plenty. The engine/tranny combo is pretty heavy too so be careful when its up. Make sure you do this on concrete! I also bag the tranny ouput shaft with a sandwich bag and then wrap electrical tape around it so it doesn't leak. And its always a good idea to take the distributor cap off so you don't catch it on the firewall upper lip.

Just go slow. I pulled mine out this weekend as well and I'll list what I forgot to take off:

throttle cable
tranny wires
kickdown cable went AROUND an engine bay harness so I had to do that last minute

Take a creeper or skateboard or something, and toss it under the tailshaft. Keeps it from smacking the concrete. Have another person with a car to run to the parts store for you when you inevitably find out you forgot or broke something.

Oh and listen to Travis and try to find a level concrete pad. You can swap an engine in the grass (ask me how I know), but it's nothing but a PITA, especially if you've never done one before.

Great idea! I usually use a block of wood as close to the tailshaft as I can get. I still use my skateboards (at 29 I still board!). I've used a small jack before too. This time I left the cross member in and then lifted the tranny up over it. Next time I'll take it out and leave the tailshaft on one of my small lifts so it has wheels.

If you're feeling brave you can pull the engine and leave the tranny on blocks. I did it when I swapped the Merc engine, and it came out fine... on the second stab. Wink

Would have been easier with a Chevy, since old Ford big block trannies have full bellhousings, not 3/4 like the 700R4's.

Why if he's brave? Tranny coming out with the motor is easier on the ford. Way not neccessary with a SBC. If it's a stick, I pull the trans out with the motor. Auto leave in place.

I just hate having to crawl under there and do all those damn bolts. Especially if stuff doesn't line up right and you have to drop the tranny down anyway cause you can't reach the top bolts.

take your distributor off right away to avoid breaking it. The tailshaft stuff is a pain but if you do it like this its easy.

-lift the car off the ground (even rear)
-shake the car to make sure it's stable! If you're not comfortable shaking it why would you crawl under it?
-use a floor jack to take weight of tranny off crossmember
-remove tranny crossmember
-lower the tranny so you can unbolt the torque arm mount, tranny/crossmember bolts, shift linkage, speedo cable, and cooler lines if you want to
-then put it back up with the crossmember not bolted to the tranny
