So I had a bit...no, A LOT of a scare while driving home from a friend's tonight.

My 4th gen Camaro has been making some noise when I turn to the left, mostly like a squeaky brake-type noise. Looked at all four rotors the other day, saw that the ones on the rear right are in the worst shape, figured it was just time for new pads/surface rotors, no big deal...

Yeah....I might have been wrong.....

So I'm driving down Marine drive, just tootling along, and I hear the horrible screeching sound occasionally on curves.....then louder, while I"m driving straight......then theres this is chattering....then its like someone pulled the e-brake on me......Did almost a 360 and came to rest facing sideways in the opposite lane.

Tried to turn it around and move it back into the other lane and it was fighting me to move, and hobbling. I had it at 2500rpm in first trying to move it, and it did nothing but buck and shake like crazy. I decided to shut it down, and push it.

A couple cars stopped by this point and me and three other dudes tried to push it. Both rear tires wouldn't move. Acted like they were locked up with the E-brake on.

Called home, and called the AAA number.

nearly an hour later the car is sitting at Ron Tonkin Chevy and I'm home now.

Talked to the parentals, and they are just gonna see what happens, and asked me what I can afford to fix.

my heart is still thumping pretty quick....

Crying or Very sad This is not what I need right now.

UPDATE! some good news, some bad.

everything inside the axle is okay. No broken pieces, everything is ok there shape there.

Bad news is the E-brake stuff inside the passenger rear rotor hat is what went fubar, The retainer that held one of the shoes broke off, and the shoe basically went sideways and locked itself against the rotor, and axle flange.

It ended up bending my brake line and doing some damage to the caliper carrier as well, so I'll need new E-brake hardware for that side, a new caliper carrier, rotor, axle for that side and a brake line.

$1148 worth of damage so far.....Sad

$1148? Sounds like maybe $200. Count your axle splines and then get everything from the junkyard except get a drum brake spring kit and a shoe kit from a parts store. Its also the same stuff on an S10 except they run shorter axles.

The 4thgens use a hub in rotor designed ebrake that parts stores didn't carry when I worked at them, they may now however.

Are you already being charged for that stuff or can you supply your own parts?

I would do this myself, but lately I've been lacking the time, and I have an immediate need for my car, since the 3rd gen isn't together right now.

Parents said they'd help out with what they could, so I have some relief there.

it just sucks, but it'll get fixed.
