Is anybody even still on 56K? Anyhoo... pulled everything off the 390 today, and I may have possibly found a little problem with this engine Very Happy

It looks kinda like the #2 cylinder might have had something in it too, not quite sure:

This is what's left of the valves:

When pulling the lifters I noticed one of the ones on the dead cylinder was a little different from all the others (right side in this pic):

And as it turns out is was a LOT different:

The cam is also pretty ganked on that same lobe:

So what do you guys think could have caused that much damage? Just a bad cam? Bad lifter? Bad oil? I can't say for sure, but the engine probably has less than 10K on it, and was a fresh build.

Bad oil. Bad tune. Head Gasket. Valve/headwork. List goes on. There is some serious black in there. I'm suprised that's 10k. Look more like 150k.

You know I was thinking that as I pulled it apart. The block looks new, but the pistons look like crap.

Either way, it's all headed towards the same scrap heap.

Looks like the cylinder wall busted open? How long has it been sitting before you pulled the heads off? Jeebus thats a lot of damage. It looks pretty bad for 10k.

Ouchie.....Shocked

All hope is not lost, if its just the motor..

On the bright side you could fit a 429 or 460 in there. Very Happy

the cam is exactly to a t what my cams kept looking like being pulled out of my v6. Found out later is was due to lack of zinc in the new epa regulated oil.

Now, the rest of that is a bit confusing. But does look like the cyl wall was thin. But it still shouldnt have rusted that much unless its been sitting for years Confused

390ci? Whats that in?

The 390 is supposedly a 390GT from a '68 Mustang. The intake is right for that engine, but I don't think the heads are.

The car sat for three years after that damage, so that explains the rust, but not why there's so much carbon on the pistons.

BTW, Chris, I'm kinda torn between an FE, and a 385 series but I'll probably stick with the FE for the old-school appeal. Plus I already have all the parts for it, minus one head and the longblock. Wink

@ Chris: replied.

@ Travis: yeah, the cylinder wall is torn into the rear water jacket. I still haven't found that intake valve though. Shocked
