ok, so someone cut my shifter to put a fake carbon fiber walmart one on there.. so today i went to dan the camaro man and scored a shifter for about $8 perfect shape, just needs a new shift knob.. so i was thinking it was going to be a quick swap.. i got about 5 bolts out, but on the driver side of the lower boot, the bolts are basically right on the line of the console and i cannot reach it with anything..

My question is, do i have to pull the console out/unbolt it and lift it to get to the screws, or am i missing some short of secret?

Removing the console is probably the easiest way to do it. I also need to replace the whole shifter on my 89 and removing the console is the main thing keeping me from doing it (though it's not hard to remove). I'll probably replace the carpet at the same time with one I have waiting to go in.

Ok, so i got the lower boot off without messing with the center console, big p.i.t.a... i couldn't find all the bolts to get the console out, so i just pulled a bit of carpet out, and got a wrech.. worked well, i'll get some before and afters in a bit, looks a world of difference, and definitly feels alot better... next up is deciding shift knobs, cause i don't like the plastic stock ball.. anyone know where to get a slp style shifter for less then $70 bucks?

The console come out in two pieces, probably why you couldn't find all the screws Wink

The upper part comes out with the "box", which also has 2 screws in the bottom, then the rest of the screws are accessible where the box was. Sorry you didn't get this info sooner.

Congrats on getting your new shifter in the hard way Cool

BTW, when you find the shifter ball you like, let me know, my 89 needs a better one.

haha yea i wish i would of known sooner, i got the top piece loose, but i don't know if it's just kind of stubern to get off, or if i was missing a screw, but i couldn't get the top part off... but at least you informed me for future reference about the bottom part.. also i noticed at the bottom of the console where the power window stuff is supose to go, i found a bunch of wires, couldn't see where t hey led, do you know what they are for?

as for the shifter, the shifter off my grandpa's '88 t bird is similar to the SLP one, i took it off and tried it on mine and it fit, i think i might get on flee bay or somthing and see if i can find one in decent shape to put on my car

Do you have a hatch release switch in your console? That would be my guess for those wires if you don't.

nope, everything's manual.. so if those wires are for that, how hard would it be to put that in there? and how common is it to be driving down the road and hit the switch?.. my arm's always on the center console

If it's wired right, it won't happen. The park brake has to be set in order for that switch to release the hatch, it enables the ground. I've had more than one service center call and ask me how to open my hatch to get a part I left there for them (key doesn't work). They park the car and leave it in gear without setting the brake, then the switch doesn't work. Laughing
