I took off the heads and found the pistons to have a marking of 040 does this mean the cylinders are .040 inches bored over? Does any one know what type of pistons these are? Also does this block look to be decked? I should be able to run the 64cc head with these pistons correct, if the old heads were 76cc heads? What is with the random notch on the side of the piston?

Since the motor was over heated several times before it came into my possession. I am going to replace the rings. Are there different rings for different brands of pistons, or do they only differ by the piston size? Are there any brands of rings I should avoid.

The notch indicates the forward side of the piston. Where do you see the 040? If its stamped on top.. then yes that indicates a 0.040 overbore. You'll need to order rings for that size. There are different ring widths, but usually only for performance pistons. You'll probably be running a stock type ring setup. I've had good luck with most all rings actually. You'll probably want a moly ring. But even plain iron will seat fine and work. I'm running plain iron in my 327.. and moly in my truck. If its a stock to mild performance build, I'd just run perfect circle, speedpro, trw, federal mogul, whatever. Do you have a dingleball hone? You'll need one.

Block looks fine from what i can see. As for compression you might want to run the specs through a dynamic compression calculator.. see what happens.

Speed pro rings work great and are priced great.

You need to hone the cylinder before putting new rings in. If the car didn't smoke, just leave it alone. You pulled the engine all the way out or are you thinking about doing this in the car? You said you pulled the heads off and your picture is hard to tell if the motor is in the car yet.

Flat top with 4 relief should be fine for 64cc head. You'll need to measure piston deck height to figure out what size gasket you need.

Can't tell from the picture if it's decked or not. The "notch" is a mark on the piston that tells you to install the piston/rod with the notch facing the front of the motor. It's a reference mark for assembly.

This will be done in the car because I am lacking a engine puller/stand. I already have a honing tool, and the engine hasn't even developed a ridge. The car does smoke on start up until its warm.

Does the piston need come up completely flush with the top of the block to be considered decked? Is there any way to tell if the pistons are forged?

When trying to run those dynamic compressor ratio programs they want the static CR. Should I estimate 9.5?

You CANNOT replace the rings in the car. Some older cars that don't have a K member underneath you COULD however, when you hone the engine block, you need to completely wash it out.

Smoke on start up is your valve seals.

Decking can be anything a builder sets the block to. A zero deck is usually around .003 below the head surface. You need to measure to the thousandth. You can't tell what the pistons are made of unless you have a part number really. Those look like Hypereutectics from what I can tell. Forgings would be typically heavier.

The compression ratio calculators give you the compression. Static is what everyone refers to as compression ratio. Dynamic compression takes your cam's intake closing angle into consideration and gives you a "dynamic" stroke length.

hehe.. I knew i could leave the specifics to Paul. I definatly wouldnt be doing a rebuild in car. Everything needs to be spotless and the grindings from the hone will find their way into everything.

Is your honing tool a 3finger hone? or the dingleberry style? If its a 3 finger dont use it. You'll just make things worse. The dingleberry just scratches up the surface in prep for the new rings, the 3 finger will try to remove material and reshape the cylinder.

I have the three finger style is it possible to rent the dingle berry style hone? You can jack up the engine to take out the pistons I have done it before.

How are you going to remove the oil galley plugs to clean out those passages that will now be full of hone metal shavings? Which by the way is the best lapping compound know to man.

huh Confused That is the only style I have seen. Can someone post a pic of this new style one?

Where do you get the different style of hone? They only sell the three finger at jegs and summit.

I've seen that style of hone at Baxter's Auto parts, but I dunno if it's the same brand.

Well if someone I knew had an engine puller I could barrow I would do that. I could get an engine stand for like 40$ from harbor freight, but the engine pullers are like 200$. Plus I have no place to permanently store the engine puller.

A hoist is one thing I haven't gotten around to purchasing. It's on the list, but nowhere near the top in terms of tools!

I called a baxter auto parts. They had a 4.125 inch diameter hone would this be the correct size?
