Does anyone make a replacement battery tray for an 88 Transam? I can't tell if these are spot welded in but there seems to be a few bolts holding something on. This appears to be the only area on the car with rust and I would like to get rid of it. I did some initial checking online and came up empty handed. Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I know, GM discontinued the battery tray. The GM part number is 10092052.

You might try Hawks thirdgens, or something like that, to see if someone has one in stock kicking around.

I also checked, and classic industries isn't listed the 3rdgen battery tray, they have all the versions from 67-81, but none for ours.

How bad is the rust? Could you pull it out, wirebrush and por15 it, then reinstall?

GM Parts Direct doesn't show that part for 1988, for grins, I looked up the same part for my 92 and found it listed for years 82-92 Confused Right side, P/N 10092052 is $21.57 (discounted from $36.39). The left side is P/N 10092053 and goes for $39.09 (no discount).

GM Parts Direct is hit and miss as to whether or not they have the part you're looking for.

I pulled one out for 91vert. Its kind of a pain to pull out. Lots of spot welds in those things....

to remove the battery tray you will have to destroy it. it is welded in. in place of it you could weld in a piece of flat steel, and drill a hole for the hold down weld in a little bid of steel to hold the battery lip. twilightoptics did something similar to get a group 75 battery to fit in a chevet.

Well, the battery isn't quite at risk of falling through, but there is rust through bad enough to warrant some definite repair.

Al, I checked those part numbers in GM Parts Direct and they came up unavailable. Where did you check them?

They're hit and miss. I didn't proceed to checkout the first time. Had I done so, I would have found out that they're unavailable. Wish they would change that feature and say so before you go to checkout Confused

I don't know how you got the part number, but I just punched those in first. I then went and did a search and found the parts you mention but still didn't see the part numbers.

I took Dewey's number, then took a guess for the opposite side. They don't seem to show numbers anymore, or the break-out drawings.

For the battery trays, I had to input year, make, model, then scroll to electrical/battery/battery tray. Gives you both parts, but no numbers. Not the cool site it used to be...

But if you know the numbers already, just input those...

There are two of those at a dealer in Glendale, Arizona if their quantity is correct. However, that's the passanger side. Which on most firebirds is the airfilter side, right?

Regardless,

SANDS MOTOR COMPANY
(623)931-9349 Ext. 2386
5418 NW GRAND AVE
GLENDALE, AZ 85301-4501

The driver side says it's not availible anymore. Damn.

It is pretty easy to just cut out the cancerous area and weld a new piece in there though.

Yes, I got a try from Blue. I had it installed in my Hardtop. It took a good weekend to remove and replace. Wonder where my pics of the install is?

That may be the route I will have to take. Thanks

Don't know if you're still looking, but someone over on TGO found some replacements. May still have to do some welding though.

Turns out the part number he provided won't pull up on their site. I haven't tried calling Classic Industries. I just hate asking questions on the phone that I should be able to look up on their web site. Oh well. Thanks anyway Al.

I finally located the part in the Classic Firebird Catalog. It's for the wrong side. That would also explain why it is also listing with the same part number in the Classic Camaro catalog. #$%^&*

Someone on TGO let me know that the non-injected Firebirds had the tray on the passenger side. Just thought I would share that information.
