So what kits do you have and what would you recommend?
I found a bunch of tranny fluid under the camaro when i went home last weekend. my guess is a gasket busted with all the cold weather we have had lately. any one have a thought? anyways, i may be taking off the tranny pan anyways so i figured it may be a good time to freshen up this slow and soft shifting 700r4 of mine.
advice?

Don't know about brand names, but one of guys at work swears by a reverse manual valve body. All the benifits of a stick without the clutch. The reverse pattern would put first where drive is and each notch back will be an upshift. Shift pattern would be P-R-N-1-2-3-4. These are supposed to be great for the track. _________________ 92 Camaro

I'm going to go with that someday Al.
For now, I'm rocking the 1-2 corvette servo, B&M, and a disconnected kickdown cable. Oh boy does it like to come around on you mid throttle through a turn on 2nd gear shift!
Just a warning though Jake, putting a shift kit on a warn tranny can cause any problems to surface suddenly. I did all the above to my V6 700r4 and its been great for over 10k. _________________ E30

Trans Go Stage II.
If your trans is on it's way out or high milage... I wouldn't put the extra strain on it.
Some say the firmer shifts help make the trans last longer. Which is true... if there isn't heavy wear already. |

After looking at tgo.. and everybody said transgo or superior. So I bought superior/fairbanks because of a discount through work.. mistake!!! It didnt work right, shift right nothing.. even used more gas.
So, then I ordered a kit from Dana/Probuilt. He takes the transgo kit and modifies it. Works perfectly and gas mileage went up 4mpg. I had a slight problem with him sending me 2 kits.. and taking forever to reimburse me for the second one. But the kit itself works flawlessly. Contact him and get what you need. |

Why not?
*Edit: In the intrest of contributing something useful for Jake, I'd stay away from the B&M kit. Mine would slam gears at low RPM, and spin the tires going into gear from park/neutral if you weren't on the brake. |

No, mine doesn't downshift. The reason I disconnected it was because sometimes when the car is sideways at low rpm it would downshift. The shift pause and different gearing would disturb the car and usually end my drift. So yes, i have to shift it down manually.
What I've heard of firmer shifts is this: Sure it makes the band pads last longer cause they don't slip on the drums so much but the sudden jerking can stretch the bands out and can cause them to break.
Jake, if you order up just the shift kit and install it I doubt you'll have problems. Unless you do something to increase your line pressure in 1st and 2nd WITH ONE OF THESE BABIES you will notice firmer shifts, but not tire barking head jerking shifts. |

| If you want to go manual the T56 would be a waste of money if he doesn't have the motor to even break a non-WC T5. I'd go with the non-WC T5 for $500 installed as opposed to the $1700 for just the tranny (not including tranny mount or pedal set). Lots of people put plenty of power in the WC-T5's too and those cost significantly less than the T56. If you're not sporting 500hp, the T56 isn't worth the price. 0.02. |

| Unless you're looking for the extra overdrive gear for fuel mileage - gas prices the way they are... |

T56
1st 2.66:1
2nd 1.78:1
3rd 1.30:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.74:1
6th 0.50:1
700r4
1st 3.06:1
2nd 1.62:1
3rd 1.00:1
4th 0.70:1
WC T5
1st 2.95
2nd 1.94
3rd 1.34
4th 1.00
5th 0.74
and the T5 is the same as teh WC-T5 but has a 3.xx 1st gear. I like the gearing of the T56. Especially with its super overdrive! 4.11's would go nice behind that! |

I figure if he's considering the shift kit, all the stuff for the T-5 swap isn't that much more expensive. _________________

I'm not sure about that Travis. I have a non-WC T5 in mine and I have a 2.95:1 first gear.
I was under the impression only the Early carburated 2.8's and all the I-4's with the 5 speed got the steeper 3.xx 1st gear. That was to make up for the lack of torque and low end power. _________________

| You can find full trans setups(pedals, clutch, flywheel, etc) periodically for $1200-1500. Just have to keep your eyes open and act FAST. |

Well I was being facetious in my original response about the t56. Then I just wanted to say that $1700 was quite a bit more than "just the trans".
I put a B&M in my 87 trans and it didn't shift any better but then again I was ~16. From what I recal it shifted hard at low rpm and the same as original at high rpm. I always hear transgo recommended the most. |
