You need to look at it then LOL.
A 1 piece rear seal will have a big round thing bolted to the back of the block.
A 2 piece rear seal all you'll see is block and crank.
86 they started the change over so it depends on when yours popped out.
My '85 LB9 was a 2 piece. :O) |

If the motor is original then it should have been a 2 piece. Are the valve covers center bolt or perimeter bolt. They did that switch at the same time as the rear main. |

I thought they switched to center bolt valve covers in '87? _________________ Richmond 3.73 posi| 36/24 sway bars | SLP LM2 | Koni's | Ground Control 800/200 | Y2K wheels | Dyno Don headers & Y-pipe | airfoil | BBK underdrive pulleys | Raised strut mounts | Extended ball joints | LCARB'S

Some '86 blocks were 1 piece rear, and cut for rollers but still had a tappet cam. |

Ok my bad guess I'm used to the "newer" style small block. Thought the LB9's were one of those, thats why I said yes. Didn't know they came out in 85. And I thought I was a third gen geek. _________________ Thirdgenless |

I've got a motor out of an 86 Z ,.. its a 1 piece main, has the castings for a roller cam. But isnt machined for it, has a flat tappet. My 87 has roller and 1 piece main. |

Another way to tell is whether or not the flywheel has a counter balance (metal slug) attached to it. 1-piece rear mains need to be externally balanced by the flywheel. 2-piece rear mains were internally balanced except the 400 small block. |

Negative. The thirdgen 1 piece rear motors are internally balanced. |
