por15 or rust bullet are the best 2 products you can apply over 'rust' to stop them. both are good, ive seen both used on various projects and have held up very well although i think rust bullet is a little bit better bang for the buck and some of the product tests show better results.
most of the misc hardware on my car was coated in this. if you have outer panels with rust, however, you will want have them cut out and replaced w/ clean metal (depending on the quality of finish you are looking for) and then paint them w/ good epoxy primer...paint... _________________

I use phosphoric acid. Depends on where the rust is though. Iron has a greater affinity towards Iron Phosphate (FEPO4) than Iron Oxide (FE2O3 rust). So when you put it on it turns black, iron phosphate. The wonderous thing about FEPO4 is that its water soluble.
So basically slather it in naval jelly and wash the rust off. Reapply as necessary and paint when done. _________________ E30

you could also wire wheel it and throw some primer and paint on it. _________________

| If its external body panel damage, then ya..cut it out and weld in some new metal. If its like your floorboard or something, then go ahead and por15 it. A little por15 goes a long ways though. It only took 1 quart to do my entire 67 stepside chassis, with a little left over. Por15 does not like clean sheet metal though. It takes more preperation to make it stick to clean metal then rust. With rust you just have to make sure its degreased, knock the large scale off, then paint it on with a brush. It's self leveling so it'll leave no brush marks. I've not tried rust bullet yet, so not sure how well it works. Eastwood rust encapsulator(Corroless) works well too, but its very hard to topcoat. I used it on my 64 velle and then used bedliner over the top of it. Bedliner started peeling a couple years later. Alot of the so called rust stopping primers are a total waste of money in my opinion. They're a quick fix that'll last a year maybe 2. |
