|
|
Alright, today I decided to fill up my tank at the Chevron by my work, on Baseline in Hillsboro. So I pull in, tell him to fill it on plus, and to my amazement, the meter passes 15.5 gallons right on up to 16.3 gallons. Mind you, there was still some gas left in my tank. as far as I know, our regular F-body's have 15.5 gallon tanks, 1LE's got 17 gallon tanks, some early models got 12-13 gallon tanks, and exports were a different capacity I believe. Then as I get home i tell my mom about this, and she just had a similar expirience at another local Chevron (in the jeep, a 20 gallon tank, she got 21 gallons, she wasn't right on E either) So now this has got me questioning the accuracy of those gas pump meters at 3 bucks a gallon.
I've heard of similar stories before but never really thought much of them until now. anyone else ever had any similar experiences? _________________ Richmond 3.73 posi| 36/24 sway bars | SLP LM2 | Koni's | Ground Control 800/200 | Y2K wheels | Dyno Don headers & Y-pipe | airfoil | BBK underdrive pulleys | Raised strut mounts | Extended ball joints | LCARB'S

that's definitely shady for sure...
I've not experienced that, I've got a 16.5 gallon tank and know, give or take half a gallon, about where I need to be.
but to be really honest, I've never paid much attention to it, I just fill up and go...
do keep in mind though, the tank also doesn't include what can be stuffed inside the filler neck, so that might not help a whole lot either.
if you're feeling taken advantage of, keep receipts, and continue to use that place, then hit them up for a full free tank when you feel like being an ass and figure you've paid enough extra |

I ran mine out last week and coasted into the station to fill up. I know mine has a 15.5 gallon tank. When I finished at the pump, I had put in 15.3 gallons, that was with one extra squeeze after the auto shut-off.
As mentioned, I would keep receipts and keep an eye on the capacities. _________________ 92 Camaro

I think I remember hearing about a couple stations in the PNW that were "fudging the numbers" a bit. I can't understand how they'd get away with it for long. Filling up my turd so once every other day I know almost exactly how many gallons I need by the guage, trip odo, and how much I've beat on the car in that tank. _________________

i have heard that this is not actually true. GM advertised an "increase of usable fuel capacity by almost two gallons" (paraphrase) due to baffling installed in the tanks. and this is on 1LE's in 89, and ALL models 90-92. the key word is usable. the capacity did not change, the new baffling kept the fuel close to the pickup under hard cornering, increasing the fuel tanks effective capacity, as it would no longer "run out of gas" on a hard corner.

I remember hearing on the news that it has something to do with temperature....
Hell, you know what I would do? Take a container I have verified it's capacity, (Such as a 5 gallon gas jug used for dirt bikes) and just fill it five gallons at a time. |

funny, i noticed the same thing. My buick has a 14.5 gallon tank, yesterday I filled up before heading into portland, I had a 1/4 tank left and it shoved in 13.9 gallons. Perhaps my math is off, but I think I got screwed lol... at 3.20/gallon on premium every gallon hurts hah. |

Until yesterday we were $3.20 for regular lol. Pumps always seem to be off. I especially like putting 6 gallons in a 5 gallon can. |

That is odd indeed. I'm pretty sure I have 14 gallons in both my 89 RS's due to the gauge and when the non-baffeled car stumbles on a slight turn I would be really suprised to learn that they have 15+gal. |

Lol, i would have to go drive my car, to remeber which way it swings. I know that when I brake, or go down a hill it drops, I can't remeber which way it goes when I turn. I was just saying that to be funny. |

but its TRUE! Anything less than 1/4 on my V6 car and it sucks air. Only seems to happen left-right. Fine on accel and brake. The LT1 89 RS tank is perfect and must be baffeled. When I took it apart last time to replace the pulse accumulator hose it looked normal. Weird. |

While we're off on this tangent, I have a question. Is it possible to replace the filler neck on these tanks? I can't get a gas cap to seal on my 89 and I've noticed some nicks around the opening. I'd like to lower the tank to replace the pump before long anyway. _________________ 92 Camaro
